My son will be turning a year old in 3 weeks!! I can't believe it. It seems like yesterday I pushed him out with no pain medication. People say the memory of birth fades but my recollection is still pretty complete and clear. It's great birth control. haha. One of the mother's in my mom's group has a boy who is 2 months older than my son and she's 3 months pregnant with #2. I admire her, I could not handle 2 at this point.

His 2 grandmothers are throwing him a party. Rather than working together, they are sort of working against each other by trying to out do the other one.

Anyone have any cute ideas for 1st bday parties? It's not going to be too big, but we are having a joint party with his girlfriend/birthday buddy. (Yes, my son already has a "girlfriend". She is 3 hours older than him. They play together regularly and the last time they saw each other he grabbed her by the collar, pulled her face to his and planted a big, wet, tongue-y kiss on her face!)

My goodness!!! time certainly flies. Something simple with a cake all lil otter's own so he can smash it, slap it, throw it. Take lots of pictures so that you can use them as blackmail later. :D

We picked a theme from an online birthday supply store for all the decor..

It was all balloons..

We bought the whole 9 yards in decor including the First B-day bib and streamers, table cloth.. etc etc...

I even had to fill up 100 decent size balloons with helium and we let them float around on the ceiling during the party.

Don't forget the plastic sheet underneath the high chair as some of those icing colors stain..

We also used Publix Grocery bakery for the adult cake and it came with a duplicate smaller cake for free just for him...

The loot bags for all the kids ( older ones ) came in the same decor of balloons but they were filled with stuff from all over.. including toys from Pier1..

Wow! How time flies, yes!

Happy early birthday, Baby Otter!

How about small cupcakes for everyone? Really tiny ones - we have a specialty shop here that does cupcakes for birthdays - I'm pretty sure you guys have it there too. It's easy and well, cute! We ordered a box of 50 with all sorts of designs such ladybugs, bees and flowers.

The decoration was pretty simple too - streamers, balloons and hats. Usual kids stuff.

at that age, the simpler the better. Cake and other toddler munchies, and low-key decorations. All they're interested in is the sweets and the package wrappings at that point, based on experiences with my sisters' kids & grandkids.

am laughing a bit over the duelling granny thing ... it's started already?

for first Bdays in my family, we would have the cake and baby on a sheet on the floor/ ground, in nothing but a diaper. you just let the little man do what he will with his cake.....

from pics of me then, i can say i loved bday cake!! my little sister didn't know what to do with until she had a piece on her plate.

it's always fun to watch.... and then his friends can join in the fun on the sheet too!

My friend and I decided that we want to do a cupcake tree instead of a cake. It's going to be out in the country - his paternal grandparents live right off the river and there is a smaller spring at the end of their property that pours into the river, and a 5 minute walk from their house is a big spring and a park.

The picture from my 1st birthday I have cake on my hands and am crying. From the parties we've been to, it seems like first birthdays are pretty stressful for babies.

Today we're going to the park with some other babies. I am so domesticated nowadays.

Can't believe baby otter is almost a year old.

Oh my goodness! I can hardly believe little Otter will soon be one. It's amazing how fast they grow. I had a real cute rubber ducky party for my Daughter when she turned one she's a July baby too. I Ordered all the supplies from an an online party express store, it was easy as pie. I kept it simple with close family and cousins. Happy B'day Baby Otter!:)

A common mistake most parents make is that they go all-out, crazy for their child's first birthday. I was guilty of it myself. A big party, large cake, invited everyone I had met in the last fifteen years (and their grandmothers). You should do that for their fourth or fifth birthday party, because when the big day finally comes, they aren't going to have the slightest recollection of it to take with them into adulthood, they can't really appreciate any of the decor or presents or guests and then you'll be so baby-partied out that the next few birthdays will almost seem like a hassle. Sounds like the grandmothers are taking most of the burden right? Let them, you just enjoy the ride, and plan something big for your son on a birthday when he'll actually be old enough to remember it, and enjoy it.

We ended up just doing a small family party, and staggering the fun times throughout the weekend - a visit to the park here, a trip to the pool there, a hike in the woods with his pops and older brother. Some grandma time, some grandpa time, some time with his little baby friends.

We just did cake and presents at home in the evening of hsi birthday. I made an all organic cake - olive oil and orange blossom water with whipped cream and blueberry frosting. Yum. I even whipped the whipped cream myself. It was a labor of love.

I put up a picture of my son enjoying his cake, he ate it with a fork like a big boy at first, but eventually did abandon the fork out of frustration and returned to eating pieces with his fingers.

We had a good time, and I will save the rigamarole for when he's bigger. He just started walking and still stumbles around like he's drunk and falls on his face pretty often, so a big party would have involved me running around baby wrangling all day. And if mama isn't having fun, no one is. Haha.

Also, he was so thrilled to get just a few presents. Would that they stayed that way forever...

Sounds like Little otter had a special day.:) When they are that age, the simple party's are much easier. I remember those days when they are first learning to walk.. and they stumble around and fall often. It's awful cute, but you have to watch them every minute. You can save the big parties for when he's a touch older. Enjoy these younger years. Cause when they grow up everything along with them get's bigger.
