If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it was meant to be.

Do you think in order to really know how much you love someone or how much they love you, you have to lose them at least once?

Or is that just in movies? Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back.

Do all people in long-term successful relationships really breakup or seperate for a time or do they always know that's the person for them and they don't have to test it?

I don't think it's necessarily true. If it's true love then you should know the first time and you should not have to set it free. I suppose it could be true but in my opinion it's a bunch of hogwash. I think if a person leaves you or wants to leave then it just wasn't meant to be.

Just like anything else, there is not one universal answer to this question.

The majority of long term relationships, as far as I've ever known, all involve periods where the people split up.

Sure there are the people who pull off the fairy-tale relationship where they are together forever without a hiccup.

It's not simply about IF it happens, it's HOW you handle it if the situation does arise. Looking at it from that slightly different perspective, if there is a "break" or a "breakup" your best bet is to let it go. Show your (ex) partner that you understand, that you aren't going to hound them into coming back, and if they do, then they are yours.

currently on a break up from on/off for 3 yrs. It has almost been a month;the longest we have every been apart. I believe that sometimes u have to be apart to come together(or i hope). It depends on the relationship i guess. my ex says she is not in love with me anymore and that we lack an emotional connection. I agree but i do believe it can be rekindled. It may take some time apart. although she has been on a couple of dates and went over a guys house i really dont know if we will get back together or not. I hope so but it is a chance for both of us to love ourselves and find out what we want and like and maybe down the road we can spark it up again.

What I always try to remember is that no one knows what the future will bring. I've lost the person I consider to be the love of my life twice, and this time, it is more painful, but I also am handling it better knowing that from this, I will work towards being an even better person than I was with him. And whether that brings him back or not, either way I'll be better off... I'll be a better Me for any new prospects and for him, if he does decide to come back. Preparing for the future can't be a passive process.

If you have to set it free, for it to appreciate you, it's a HUUUUGGGGGEEEE red flag!! You set it free so you can be free and move on.

i'd agree with this.

i'm more of the mentality that if someone loves you, then they will be with you.

of course there are circumstances when a loved one has to go away, but that is different. keep in mind that there is huge difference between having to go and wanting to go. that said, when it comes to romantic relationships, unless there is a cirumstance in which your loved one must go, then the reason for their departure is, simply put, because they want to go.

and if they do, how is real love? it isn't. when you truly love someone, you don't want to take an indefinite vacation from them.

That's it exactly. Especially the bolded paragraph.

Wow, thanks for writing that e.clipse. Mine HAD to go, he didn't have a choice, he didn't want to. So now I'm thinking about calling as it was so abrupt, sudden and unexpected.
