knaveman Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 I started a thread earlier about opening my own business as my only means of full time employment. Well now things are different and I'm not really considering it anymore. Business at the company I'm laid off from is picking up again, not sure if it's going to be permanent or even full time but everyone is very positive about things. But now I'm considering leaving the electrical field. A friend of mine, that used to also be my apprentice, called to tell me that his company was hiring and that he could put in a good word for me. It's an office job but still in the construction industry. I've never worked an office job before and am not too sure how I would handle being stuck at a desk for eight hours a day. I would have to commit to and 18 month contract, the company pays for six month training and in return I have to work for them for a year. I really like the idea of working for my friends company. I like the steady paycheck, benefits, 401k (I don't have any kind of retirement yet and I'm 33) construction industry, computer work, etc. It feels like the right thing to do. However, for some reason it really bothers me to leave electrical. I've put the last seven years of my life into being a good electrician, but I also haven't been able to find more than a weeks worth of electrical work in the last seven months. I'll never unlearn my electrical skills and I'll keep the licenses for at least another three years so it's not like I can't go back to it if I really want to. I just kinda feel like I'm losing a friend if I leave electrical.
OpenBook Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Can you moonlight as an electrician? Would the company allow you to do that? PS. Glad to hear things are looking up economically!
Author knaveman Posted June 6, 2009 Author Posted June 6, 2009 Above table electricianing is pretty much 9 to 5 type job. Under table is not a good idea, that's how people lose licenses. It'll probably just have to be my fall back job. I hope things begin to look up economically for others soon too.
