I decided that summer 2010 is the summer I finally do some volunteer work. I want to volunteer oversees, particularly in India. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with a specific organization or could recommend an organization to volunteer though. I am so nervous about falling for a fake and giving my time and money to someone who does a poor job or isn't even real. All comments that could help lead me are welcome!

Thanks.

Weird...or synchronistic, or whatever! I googled "kriya yoga" a couple of days ago, and was impressed with by kriya.org's projects described under "Charity" tab. Don't have any information or experience with them other than that, though.

You could also research more well-known organizations, though -- Unicef and Red Cross come to mind.

Wishing you good luck and many rewards as a volunteer.

US AID is one of the best out there.

Try the red cross?

Also, for "everyday" volunteering, I use craigslist. My last "job" was to clean the riversides of my community (ya, people are pigs..).

Also, although I can see why India, I'd like to point out that there is a lot to do in the US as well.

I have been looking to CrossCultureSolutions. It looks like a good program. One of the few that includes everything from meals and water to transportation. Thanks for the suggestions, and all tips and info are still welcome!
