How long do you keep your online dating profile open?

I was just reading over a topic where someone commented on a person they are dating updating their online dating profile. And that got me thinking on this topic.

When you start dating someone, how long do you usually wait until you decide you are done with your search and close your profile?

I am a member of eharmony, and I remember I was about to close it once because I had been out with a girl several times and was pretty excited about it, and then suddenly one day she writes to me and says "I don;t know how to say this but I have decided to pursue a relationship with another person". So obviously she was going out with him at the same time she went out with me. I guess eharmony is different then let's say places like match because you can't just search and look over any profiles, just the ones matched to you.

That is the one bad thing about dating sites. That you know if they are dating you, they are dating others. So when you do get attached to someone you can't help but feel like there is competition all over. I have been dating a girl I met though eharmony for about 3 weeks, and she still has her profile open. But then again so do I, because let's face it, until I am in a serious commited relationship I wouldn't want to throw away my chances and close my account.

What are your opinions or stories on this?

Online dating and normal dating are the same for me: until we have a discussion where we decide to be exclusive, I assume they are dating other people.

Your story about the girl saying 'sorry but im going in another direction' is something that happens all the time, so I wouldnt ever take down my dating profile, but I would stop checking it/updating it if a girl and I decided to be exclusive.
