colosseum Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Can the quality of one's skin deter you from dating someone? I ask because I have some acne that I think will come to pass. My feelings are that it shouldn't be a hugely determining factor and would only be as important as one makes it out to be. Others?
D-Lish Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 It can be problematic. I'd suggest seeing a doc and getting it looked after, or go the pro-active route. Honestly- anyone I have known with acne has used pro-active and come out with clear skin....
lora22 Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Honestly I think it depends on your personality and the girl's personality. Some people are more shallow than others. Some people will care, others won't.
Chicago_Guy Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 It could be. Men generally do prefer smooth, healthy-looking skin.
Art_Critic Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 It could be. Men generally do prefer smooth, healthy-looking skin. I'll agree with CG.. The flip side of a guy having back acne is that women love to pop pimples on men's backs.. So it could be a plus to a popper...
Citizen Erased Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I'll agree with CG.. The flip side of a guy having back acne is that women love to pop pimples on men's backs.. So it could be a plus to a popper... I'm female and I'm guessing the OP was about girls with acne but anyway, on a guy I don't really care. I've had boyfriends with and without it. I agree that it shouldn't be a "hugely determining factor". And I have very clear skin myself. Like D suggested, Pro Active.
thegoodlife Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I personally don't care and it's not a determinant to me, but everyone's different.
Lucky_One Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 If acne was a deterrent to dating, then 60% of high school kids would graduate as dating virgins.
Princess_in_love Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Pro-Active made me break out worse than I ever had. Wasn't for me.
likestolaugh Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 my gf is very understanding about my back acne. So I guess it just depends.
start-fresh Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 If acne was a deterrent to dating, then 60% of high school kids would graduate as dating virgins. Yeah, but everybody has acne in high school. Once people get to be college aged or even later it clears up for most people and is no longer the norm. Also, proactive doesn't work for everybody. My sister used it for a while and it never really worked for her. Personally, it's not a big deal for me unless it's that really bad cystic acne or something. A little bit doesn't deter me though.
neowulf Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Having had reasonably nasty acne all through high-school I can say yes, unfortunately it will make a difference. However, most of that will have to do with how you feel about yourself due the acne. If you can ignore it and remain outgoing and confident, then people won't really seem to care all too much about it. However, if you let it erode your self esteem, it can seriously effect how attractive others will find you. There are many excellent treatments for Acne these days. I'm not talking about "skin care" products. I'm talking about actual medication. If it really bothers you, go have a chat with your GP about the options available.
Ruby Slippers Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Yeah, I'd just see a dermatologist. In most cases these days, acne can easily be cleared up with topical prescription medication.
Author colosseum Posted May 29, 2009 Author Posted May 29, 2009 I'm female and I'm guessing the OP was about girls with acne but anyway, on a guy I don't really care. OP was about guys, actually. I'm a heterosexual dude. So...thoughts, ladies? However, most of that will have to do with how you feel about yourself due the acne. If you can ignore it and remain outgoing and confident, then people won't really seem to care all too much about it. However, if you let it erode your self esteem, it can seriously effect how attractive others will find you. Yeah, this is how I feel...true for others on the outside as well?
xpaperxcutx Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Dermatologist are a bunch of bull****ters. They won't recommend anything to you unless you have severe acne and even then they'll only give you the ones that are the most expensive. I used to have severe facial acne when I was in high school, and it's left a bit of scars. But they're barely noticeable when I have makeup on and I plan to get laser surgery in the future. The point of the matter is, you have to try out every thing you can before you come across a medium that will help your skin. Everyone's skin is different, and what works for some will not work for others. Just like proactiv can work for some and neutogena can work for others. And the price never really play a role. Expensive doesn't mean it's 100% effective, merely because it's the asking price of the brand. Even the a $6 Clean n Clear can work without shelling out $40 for murad. Just try out different brands. But don't use them for a few days and switch products if you don't see results. With acne, you have to be patient. Afterall, it took me two years to finally get perfect skin.
Star Gazer Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 If acne was a deterrent to dating, then 60% of high school kids would graduate as dating virgins. Really? I thinking only about 2% of my high school had BAD acne. The rest just had the occasional pimple. I was lucky, I guess. I have had probably 5 zits my entire life.
carhill Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 The flip side of a guy having back acne is that women love to pop pimples on men's backs..Yeah, if my W went for my dick the way she went at my back, we'd likely still be happily married Topically, when you get to be my age, most women have their battle marks from life. No getting around it. I vastly prefer a healthy psyche to unblemished skin
likestolaugh Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I was lucky, I guess. I have had probably 5 zits my entire life. I wish I was you, lol.
missdependant Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Personally, I like smooth skin. :-) Pro-Active worked great for me. During the first two weeks it's normal to break out; sometimes a little worse than normal (your skin has to get used to the change). But after the first break out, it usually does a pretty good job of controlling it. Another brand to look into is Aveda. You can try out a lot of different brands for free at first. Or a lot of them have money-back-guarantees. Good luck. Oh yeah, and back acne is pretty fun to take care of, lol.

My feelings are that it shouldn't be a hugely determining factor and would only be as important as one makes it out to be. Others? It's not clear if you're a guy or a woman. As a guy, I've realised that 60% of what makes a girl attractive to me is the skin quality. It could easily trump some curves and average facial features. (Hence, my thing for asian chicks - best skin ever). Having acne does not mean tha you have a bad skin, however. Acne is gross but curable.
likestolaugh Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Acne is gross but curable. Incorrect, usually. It's controllable (sometimes), but not curable. If there was a cure, you'd have heard about it.
Sam Spade Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Incorrect, usually. It's controllable (sometimes), but not curable. If there was a cure, you'd have heard about it. Accutane .
likestolaugh Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 which is not a cure necessarily... works for some people... not for others. I will say that it's certainly one of the most effective methods out there though (if you're willing to risk the other health issues which could come with it)
xpaperxcutx Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Acne is a result of hormones, and if you keep a balanced diet and lifestyle, then you can control the amount of beakout that occurs. I notice that ever since eliminating meat from my diet and eating fresh, my skin has improved more than 90% from when I used to binge on junk food. Sometimes it just depends on lifestyle. Other times, genetics come into play.
