Can the quality of one's skin deter you from dating someone? I ask because I have some acne that I think will come to pass.

My feelings are that it shouldn't be a hugely determining factor and would only be as important as one makes it out to be.

Others?

It can be problematic. I'd suggest seeing a doc and getting it looked after, or go the pro-active route. Honestly- anyone I have known with acne has used pro-active and come out with clear skin....

Honestly I think it depends on your personality and the girl's personality. Some people are more shallow than others. Some people will care, others won't.

It could be. Men generally do prefer smooth, healthy-looking skin.

I'll agree with CG..

The flip side of a guy having back acne is that women love to pop pimples on men's backs..

So it could be a plus to a popper...

I'm female and I'm guessing the OP was about girls with acne but anyway, on a guy I don't really care. I've had boyfriends with and without it. I agree that it shouldn't be a "hugely determining factor". And I have very clear skin myself. :p

Like D suggested, Pro Active. ;)

I personally don't care and it's not a determinant to me, but everyone's different.

As a guy, I don't care.

If acne was a deterrent to dating, then 60% of high school kids would graduate as dating virgins.

Pro-Active made me break out worse than I ever had. Wasn't for me.

my gf is very understanding about my back acne. So I guess it just depends.:)

Yeah, but everybody has acne in high school. Once people get to be college aged or even later it clears up for most people and is no longer the norm.

Also, proactive doesn't work for everybody. My sister used it for a while and it never really worked for her. Personally, it's not a big deal for me unless it's that really bad cystic acne or something. A little bit doesn't deter me though.

Having had reasonably nasty acne all through high-school I can say yes, unfortunately it will make a difference.

However, most of that will have to do with how you feel about yourself due the acne.

If you can ignore it and remain outgoing and confident, then people won't really seem to care all too much about it.

However, if you let it erode your self esteem, it can seriously effect how attractive others will find you.

There are many excellent treatments for Acne these days. I'm not talking about "skin care" products. I'm talking about actual medication.

If it really bothers you, go have a chat with your GP about the options available.

Yeah, I'd just see a dermatologist. In most cases these days, acne can easily be cleared up with topical prescription medication.

OP was about guys, actually. I'm a heterosexual dude. So...thoughts, ladies?

Yeah, this is how I feel...true for others on the outside as well?

Dermatologist are a bunch of bull****ters. They won't recommend anything to you unless you have severe acne and even then they'll only give you the ones that are the most expensive.

I used to have severe facial acne when I was in high school, and it's left a bit of scars. But they're barely noticeable when I have makeup on and I plan to get laser surgery in the future.

The point of the matter is, you have to try out every thing you can before you come across a medium that will help your skin. Everyone's skin is different, and what works for some will not work for others. Just like proactiv can work for some and neutogena can work for others.

And the price never really play a role. Expensive doesn't mean it's 100% effective, merely because it's the asking price of the brand. Even the a $6 Clean n Clear can work without shelling out $40 for murad.

Just try out different brands. But don't use them for a few days and switch products if you don't see results. With acne, you have to be patient. Afterall, it took me two years to finally get perfect skin.

Really? I thinking only about 2% of my high school had BAD acne. The rest just had the occasional pimple.

I was lucky, I guess. I have had probably 5 zits my entire life.

Yeah, if my W went for my dick the way she went at my back, we'd likely still be happily married :D

Topically, when you get to be my age, most women have their battle marks from life. No getting around it. I vastly prefer a healthy psyche to unblemished skin :)

I wish I was you, lol.

Personally, I like smooth skin. :-)

Pro-Active worked great for me. During the first two weeks it's normal to break out; sometimes a little worse than normal (your skin has to get used to the change).

But after the first break out, it usually does a pretty good job of controlling it.

Another brand to look into is Aveda.

You can try out a lot of different brands for free at first. Or a lot of them have money-back-guarantees.

Good luck.

Oh yeah, and back acne is pretty fun to take care of, lol.

It's not clear if you're a guy or a woman. As a guy, I've realised that 60% of what makes a girl attractive to me is the skin quality. It could easily trump some curves and average facial features. (Hence, my thing for asian chicks - best skin ever). Having acne does not mean tha you have a bad skin, however. Acne is gross but curable.

Acne is gross but curable.

Incorrect, usually. It's controllable (sometimes), but not curable. If there was a cure, you'd have heard about it.

Accutane .

which is not a cure necessarily... works for some people... not for others. I will say that it's certainly one of the most effective methods out there though (if you're willing to risk the other health issues which could come with it)

Acne is a result of hormones, and if you keep a balanced diet and lifestyle, then you can control the amount of beakout that occurs.

I notice that ever since eliminating meat from my diet and eating fresh, my skin has improved more than 90% from when I used to binge on junk food.

Sometimes it just depends on lifestyle. Other times, genetics come into play.
