Dammit! Art, I'd love to stay on here but you're watching me procrastinate finishing a pretty major workload.

Hehehe OK seriously, I have so. much. work. to do.

Donna, you need to come to terms with your cheeseburger and dancing with the stars addiction. Both are bad for you. Red meat is bad for your body and the environment. I would argue that yes, you are addicted to it and it would be a struggle for you to go vegetarian. Dancing with the stars? Even worse. The dancing is not even good! That makes it a bad addiction ;) Advertisers count on your compulsion to watch TV. In all seriousness, I quit TV about 5 years ago, and I'll never look back. Life is better without it, it really is. Take a walk, read a book, but for god's sake please don't rot your brain watching that garbage! It's nothing but junk food filler for your life.

Of course I'm being a little snarky, but it's true that dependency comes in many forms. Quit eating meat and watching TV for 6 months and first tell me that it wasn't difficult and second tell me that you don't feel better. You like it? Yeah, and I like cigarettes. Nope. That's our addicitons talking.

Hehehe OK seriously, I have so. much. work. to do.

:lmao:

So in order to prove you're wrong, I have to prove I can live off oatmeal and tuna sandwiches for a month I guess.

I know the difference between addiction and enjoyment. My ex - he was addicted. Probably still is. I simply enjoy it. Could take it or leave it, and have for long periods of time due to finances or my job situation or when I became pregnant. Same with food. I eat it because my body needs it, but I eat what I like because you can taste food and why not eat what tastes good to you?

Saying that everyone who EVER smokes a joint is addicted is the same as saying that everyone who EVER has a beer is an alcoholic. ;)

I have to disagree with part of that post he made, Art. Just because you want something you are addicted to it? Sorry, but that's just wrong. I wanted a cheeseburger last night, so that's what I made for dinner. So now I'm addicted to cheeseburgers? Um, okay. I wanted to watch Dancing with the Stars last night, so I watched it. I LIKE the show, so I want to watch it when it's on and have done so since the premier this season. But next week, when Monday rolls around, I'll be gnashing my teeth and wailing because it won't be on!!!

For people who are habitually addicted to it it would be that you cannot function or relax or be social without having that cheesburger because you are so used to having those cheeseburgers everyday.

Yup. You get it!

And that was my ex, to a 'T' (pot, not cheeseburgers - lol)

I have some friends who simply cannot hang out with people or go out to dinner/parties/bars without being stoned because it allows them to be relaxed and 'funny'. If they show up completely 'sober', they simply feel uneasy and out of their 'skin'.

You only eat what you know tastes good to you. By the oatmeal comment, you are probably unaware of the many delicious ways to enjoy vegetarian cuisine. Some of the best foods in the world are vegetarian. I guess a lot of people think that sandwiches and cheeseburgers are better than middle eastern food, but that cuisine has thousands of years of TLC put into it. Try it! I would argue that you just may not know what tastes better. Just like you may not know about all the good books you're missing out on by watching dancing w/ the stars, a.k.a. "watching dozens out of thousands of out-of-work b-rate hollywood actors struggle to dance for your entertainment in a thinly-veiled attempt to sell you sponsored products"

Why not eat what tastes good to you? Go to youtube and watch a couple PETA videos. Watch how the animals get treated, it will really change the way you think about eating meat. You are promoting the pain and suffering of animals because of what tastes good to you. I also enjoy meat from time to time, but I mostly eat veg. for this reason.

Dammit, dammit! These forums are also a bad compulsion! Donna! Take a walk with your baby around your neighborhood! Take her to an art museum, the zoo, anything! Art! Why are you still reading this? Shoarma! Get your ass in gear!

i've been a vegetarian for 2 years now, and I have to say my body is more healthy because of it. I can't stand people who stuff their faces with meat and go " mmm" in my face, it's disgusting.

Shoarma, you live relatively healthy. That's a good thing. Now go do your stuff.... LS is only addicting if you keep coming back.

You conveniently left out this portion of my post, Shoarma. I wonder why? No - not really. I know why. Because it proves my point. ;)

How extremely rude of someone to do that!

We could also say that about TV watching, which has been proven to be detrimental to families and society as a whole. Wanna try it? The point is, moderation is the key whether it be TV watching, eating, WORK, alcohol use, video games, pot smoking, etc. etc. etc. Of course there are SOME drugs that can kill yer arse immediately. There is no safe use there.

In honor of that, I'll be pushing away from LS for five days and putting my construction skills to work helping a friend. LS can be addictive too. :)

Awww, that's so nice of you, Carhill! You sound like my sweety. He's ALWAYS using his skills to help others.

We'll miss you though!

As advice is given it all boils down to if the OP is ready himself to quit.. Since I smoke cigarettes I know all of the negative effects and have been given a lot of advice but until I am prepared mentally and decide that I want to quit, nothing is going to change that. Sadly I've been getting used to drinking every day after work and have found it is starting to become an addiction.

Sure I can quit for a week if I wanted to unlike cigarettes but I think until someone is in a situation with an addiction is can be really hard to break that until you decide yourself. Personally I think alcohol is worse than smoking weed in the sense that some people get violent and want to start problems.. Weed I think makes you relax more. Anyways GL to the OP hope you and your SO can resolve the issue at hand.

Pot is HARDLY an addiction. My dad smoked for at least 20 years before quitting. I didn't see any difference in him from when he DID smoke a couple times a week to when he didn't smoke AT ALL. Still successful, still well-educated, still very loving and still very motivated.

If it's that big of an issue, check yourself into rehab. They might laugh a little.. that you're there for pot and everyone else is there for very SERIOUS addictions to things like heroin, crack, meth, etc..

Nonetheless, if you can't be a big boy and overcome it on your own and it's taking THAT much control over your life, then you'd probably be better off in a rehab facility.

I know/have known people who smoke from the second the wake up to the time they hit the lights for bed. Some still do it, some have quit. But I never saw ANY of them going through withdraws, relapsing or having mental episodes because of it.

Otherwise, keep on doing it. IT'S JUST POT, and you'll quit when you're ready/want to.

HUGE signs of an addicted person in denial. You are seriously whacked if you don't believe pot is an addiction. And there ARE rehab facilities that deal with people who have an addiction to marijuana -- they DO NOT LAUGH at those people and I am appalled to think you truly believe this.

Actually, I studied it in school; even did internships/work-studies at a detox center here. We discussed every different addiction that came through the door, their causes and effects, their long term/short term effects, etc. ONE person went in for marijuana use and EVERY other patient in there for something brutal like cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, alcohol etc. got a kick out of it, as well as the nurses.

But I guess that's what happens when you live somewhere that it's widely accepted!

Yeah.. I smoked pot before trying to get pregnant, for at least six years! And guess what? I never became addicted! I quit smoking it when I started trying for a baby. I had a harder time quitting cigarettes than I did pot.

Lolz, just read this entire thread.

I have a couple of comments from a somewhat different viewpoint.

Is it the pot, or is it the fact that pot is illegal? If you were to ask her if it were ok to get a prescription for xanax (very easy to get) and pop one of those a couple times a week instead, would that be ok?

Can you give up pot for her? One of the other members put it quite succinctly when they indicated that you would eventually have to give up the pot if you were going to be looking to marry her.

I also have to modify the above statement with the question of; IF you agreed to only smoke on the weekends, WHY did you break that promise? Could you not have had a beer, martini, valium (your gf will probably know where to hook you up with some cool meds if she is a Med/Psych student):p

The reason I say I have an somewhat different viewpoint is that I live in a medical marijuana state and I am a registered patient with a state issued ID card. Despite this, I DO get interesting reactions from women I date, when I finally get around to telling them about it.

Some like the idea for the WRONG reasons.

Some run away, thinking I am somehow 'defective'

Some think I am a fraud, just milking the system.

anyways, that's just my $.02

It's not that its physically addictive, rather it becomes habitually addictive. People who are chronic (ie. multiple times per day) no longer feel 'normal' socially or mentally without being stoned.

And there are effects on memory in chronic, long term usage.
