I'm all about honesty. It doesn't have to be BRUTAL to get the point across. The only reason I see a guy being BRUTAL with the truth is that he lied or held in the truth for so long that he just blows up one day and spews it out in a harsh way. Not necessary. Sit her down, talk to her about it. Maybe tell her that you miss the "mystery."

I would prefer to be told the truth, period. And yes - when I've broken up with somebody, they got the complete truth and with my XH, it WAS brutal, but then, so was the marriage.

This brings another gripe to my mind. Something that I have to pay for because of other women. If I ask a guy if I look good/bad/stupid/fat/hot in something - I WANT THE TRUTH. I don't want my ego inflated and go out looking stupid. I'd like to look attractive to him, as well - I'd like to know his tastes. I HATE that I have to preface that kind of question with, "I'm not going to get mad, this is not a catch-22 question, I'm secure enough in myself to not care about the answer, PLEASE just tell me the truth - does this make my butt look big?" I admire the man (and fall deeper in love) that can just out with the truth and give me constructive criticism.

Women need to quit being coddled when it comes to the truth and maybe more guys would actually deliver it. A guy can do something bad, but if he lies about it, I am 100x more pissed about the lie than the original act.
