Want to get a tattoo...how do I go about getting my girlfriend's blessings to do so?

Hello. I'm in a relationship--I won't go into details but we both feel it's going to last a long time. We've both talked about wanting to get a tattoo, and told each other our ideas. Well, recently I've decided that I'd like to get a tattoo of her name. I haven't brought it up to her yet because honestly I'm concerned it will sound extremely odd and/or corny.

 

I won't do it without her blessing, but my question is: will it come across as devotion or youthful stupidity to her? It's not something I'll regret at all. But I worry about how to go about bringing it up. Any tips? Also, please keep in mind that I'm asking about how I should approach her about this, not about whether or not I should have it done.

It doesn't matter how it comes across to her. It's about the dumbest thing a human could do....tattooing the name of a person of the opposite sex on your skin not knowing if you're going to be with that person the rest of your life. Oh, yeah, right now you're so much in love but you have no idea just how long that's going to last. You'll feel like a total and absolute fool if you're not with her in a year and you have to explain that tattoo to one or more subsequent love interests.

 

Beyond that, tattoos are unsightly to many and extremely foolish to others. They are a permanent symbol of your temporary tastes and mind state. When you get older and start searching for a good job, any visible tattoo will work against you. Don't do it...no tattoo anywhere. But since I don't know you, it won't hurt me if you do. And, if you do, just remember some anonymous guy named Tony on the Internet warned you that you would ultimately be very sorry.

 

Some people may think you'll be really cool looking with some tattoos on your bod but they won't have to live with them forever.

 

Buy some stick-ons and knock yourself out.

Never get someones name tattooed on your body unless it's your child, or in a memorial to a deceased family member. You will regret it in the future.

 

 

As for getting a tattoo, nothing wrong with it....just get something that is signifigant to you, such as your birth sign...or something that somehow describes your personality.

 

But be sure to make Tony happy...and don't get one on your face.

Thanks for the replies. I spent quite a while trying to word the post so as not to come across as a dumb lovestruck kid, but apparently not long enough. I don't think it would do much good to explain my mindset since it doesn't make sense to me sometimes. I could go into more detail about the relationship, but I don't think I'll be changing any minds.

 

Just for the record, I would never get a tattoo unless it was in a spot that would be concealed by a normal shirt. And I wouldn't get one as an attempt to look cool. Like LadyX said, it would be something significant to me.

 

Interesting sidenote: my name is actually Tony. That just struck me as funny considering the first person to reply to my post.

My dear, every one of us have been absolutely positive beyond a shadow of a doubt that we will love (insert name here) forever. Every one of us thought at the time that people who doubted were idiots and had no idea about what they were talking about. Every one of us learned that they did. My husband and I got married on his grandparents' marriage anniversary date because they lasted 60 years together and we intended to do the same.

But life intrudes and the best of intentions get smashed.

 

If you MUST have a tattoo to honour her, why not get one that she picks out; some symbol perhaps that she likes that would be generic should the worst happen.

 

It is very, very sweet that you care that much about her now and I hope you last forever together - but why not save tattooing her name for a tenth anniversary present?

I totally agree with this. If you just HAVE to get a tattoo in honor of her, take her with you and let her help you choose a nice tattoo or help you design your own so that it would be more personal and sure to be something nobody else has. But don't make it too specific to her, because if you do break up someday you don't want a constant reminder of her on your body. Get something that YOU would be happy with for the rest of your life, whether she's in your life or not. Think long and hard about this. You've asked for our advice and we've given it to you.

A tattoo of someone's name, hum? Not a bright idea...How about a charm bracelet? Cost about the same and is removeable. I think if you use your imagination you can come up with a more clever way to express your love for her. Remember, love is not always forever but a tattoo will be.

moimeme, that's pretty much exactly how I felt (though I never considered anyone who doubted me an idiot). I've been going through a phase lately of deliberately doing things that are outside the norm for me--maybe it will last and I won't be so bland and predictable any more.

 

I like the idea of letting her choose something. I'm a little puzzled it didn't cross my mind before. So thank you.
