CarrieT Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I've been on these dating sites and a lot of times, the guys aren't including pictures but are describing themselves as attractive. So far, less than 5% of them actually ARE! I know attraction is a matter of relativity and every person in the world is attractive to someone, but I am continually astonished at how men seem to perceive themselves (read my most recent example: http://www.loveshack.org/forums/t188211/?highlight=bait)
Land Shark Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I'm damn good looking. See what a nice smile I have?
Shygirl15 Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Do all men think they're good looking? Well, we don't know, since we don't know ALL men.
carhill Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Hell no would be my answer. That said, and I guess this might apply to both genders, when one gets enough sunshine blown up their ass to start believing their own press, well, there ya go
JeezLouise Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I think that men tend to feel better about themselves and their bodies than women do, yes.
Art_Critic Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Judging by your original post you must think you are good looking
carhill Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Nah, just a lot of men trying to get into her pants have told her that
Art_Critic Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 A man saying they are attractive isn't conceit, It is self esteem and self confidence.. How many women would go out with a guy that says they are ugly ?.. ZERO I certainly wouldn't go out with a woman who didn't think highly of themselves..
Art_Critic Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Nah, just a lot of men trying to get into her pants have told her that But, but, but..... All women look the same with the lights off
carhill Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I could say something but decorum prevents male honesty
Enema Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 You need look no further than LS for your answer. How many threads have we had where a guy says: - I'm ugly and will be a virgin forever - Am I at least average in looks etc, etc..
WhyYesThankYou Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I maintain that they do. I've been very surprised to hear (for example) a guy who's quite skinny and has some obvious physical imperfections to say, "I know I've got a great body." It's as if women share a collective delusion that they are less attractive than they really are, while men seem collectively to believe that they are more attractive than they objectively are. One could debate what is meant here by "attractive," and to whom and for what purpose the guys are evaluating themselves. But generally speaking, yes, I think guys believe (regardless of how they might be objectively assessed using the Golden Rule of symmetry and beauty and all that), that they are physically attractive. And I further believe that this is in stark contrast to how women tend to evaluate themselves.
Lizzie60 Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I am convinced that most men think they are attractive.. same with women. A 40-yr old person.. has seen his/her face for the last 40 hr.. they are 'used' to it.. and I'm sure no one (with some exceptions of course) honestly think they're ugly. Same with women/men who think they look much younger for their age.. well... surprise.. MOST do look their age.. I am totally convinced..that MOST people do not see themselves in the mirror as others see them..
somedude81 Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I really don't think that most men think they are good looking. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if most men think that they are less good looking than they really are. In the end it's really a self-esteem issue. BTW I've been on these dating sites and a lot of times, the guys aren't including pictures but are describing themselves as attractive. So far, less than 5% of them actually ARE! If a man said he was average or even below average in looks would you still be interested? I highly doubt it. So that's why these men are saying that they are attractive.
Author CarrieT Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 To me, it is an interesting phenomenon. There was one ad that I answered, yet it was a girlfriend who ended up going on a date with the guy. He said he was very handsome but apparently he had such a mangled and disfigured ear, as to make it a distraction that my girlfriend said it made him very unattractive. I guess I wouldn't mind dating a guy who is just average and thinks himself so.

Land Shark Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Yes, actually I would. I am really and truly far more turned on by erudition and intelligence than looks. Ah. That reminds me of the discussion I was having the other day with Stephen Hawking when I was visiting him at the hospital. Poor fellow. He put forth the theory that Emily Dickens was a painter and Georgia O'Keefe was a poet in some alternate universe. And both were equally successful in their occupations in that universe as the other was in this. I had to chuckle to myself, because when I did the math, the equations simply didn't add up. He even gave me the coordinates to the wormhole through which I could access this fantasy universe of his. Anyway, yes I agree, intelligence and erudition are both attractive. I, however, prefer hot chicks.
burning 4 revenge Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I have such a mangled and disfigured earShould this be the headline to his personals add?
gopher Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Should this be the headline to his personals add? Maybe his last date nibbled on it too much...
D-Lish Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Just set your mail preference to "must have pic to contact this user".... Then again, so many creeps poach photo's and pass them off as their own. I think that anyone that has to announce they are attractive without posting a pic is suspicious.
