lovelorcet Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 It has actually been in humans for at least the last few hundred years if not longer. The first anti-body tests were only available in the mid 80's but they only indicate exposure and an immune reaction to the virus. PCR based tests methods were designed after that which are able to screen for the virus itself.
Okfine Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Public concern only happend in 81 or 82 so a decade before email caught on publicly. People indiviudally started testing for Aids then. I don't doubt the disease has been around a lot longer than that though.
carhill Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 You mean decade. Aids hasn't been around for that long. ;-) My first testing was back in the mid 80's
Okfine Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Correct, which was only one decade before email, not decades before, is all I meant to say. ;-)

I've actually seen some pretty decent evidence that in it's current form HIV started with the manufacture and testing of the oral polio vaccine back in the 1950's.

Ruby Slippers Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I do not have sex with a man until we have both been tested for ALL STDs and agreed upon exclusivity. Beware, though: there is NO test for HPV in men, and it's currently one of the fastest-spreading STDs. Some strains of this can be transmitted even with condoms, or through oral sex. I always bring it up in person, in a neutral zone (lunch, hanging out). If he has any problem with it, he's not worth my time. A guy (or girl) who is really into you and the relationship will not have a problem getting tested.
