manic depressive-what are they like-is it safe to associate with them -would u

i met this guy that i use to go to church with a while ago. .

 

i met him up again randomly 4 years later at the public library ,we talk and chat and later he tells me he has a mental illness, and says hes manic depressive. one thing about this guy is -he talks very very fast and talks a lot a lotttt, tells me he has this crazy business idea and wants me to join in, says he nows barack obama and arnold schrwargger and has their number on his cell, think he can make millions doing some business idea. he lives in government social housing and has a speical colored bus card that i never seen before, and told me governemtn pays him each month money since hes on disability. he doesn't have his grade 12 and hes in his late 20's. i ask him to finish HS,but he said hes ,more intersted in creating his own business and talks about his dreams

 

what i am asking is i go to library a lot , do u think its safe to still talk to this guy once in a while or should i just ignore him completely. should i even hang out with him like i did before 4x's. he tells me he has to go home before 4 since thats when they serve dinner at his social housing place. i mean i didn;t now what manic depressive was. he told me he has it.

 

but even before telling me his illness, i knew something was wrong with this guy-his speech-talks too much and sooo fast and the stuff he says-dreams like he will be rich millions and make jobs for america.....and driving ferrarais

 

i just want to now how safe-would he harm me or do something crazy to me.would u talk to someone like this. ii mean what would u do, continue saying hey to him and talk to him,but not hang out, or hang out less or not at all. what would you do

I'd continue to be friendly when you see him but don't get too close. Just be friendly in a public place. Don't be anywhere with him in private and don't get too involved.

 

And don't get him mad. Just keep it light and kind of keep your distance.

Friendship is about both giving and taking to a reasonable degree, with a strong foundation of trust and respect. I'm not certain you can rely on this person. Sooner or later, they're going to make something up and freak out on you. Beware.

he was so eager for me to visit his social housing and saying he can show me his bodybuilding mags and ...etc and hes was so eager for me to visit my house. this after meeting him for like 40 min. lol

 

after 3rd time meeting him , we went to gym together and he took me to go his social housing i went into his room-its just dark and a small room. just glad he didn;t do anything crazy to me. hes not a big person though just taller but very skinny.

i donl;t think htye allow him to keep knives though. i didnl;t even now what maniac depressive is? hehe scary

It is Bipolar disorder, not manic depression.

 

People with bipolar disorder are more likely to self-harm (suicide attempts are not uncommon for those who are not consistently on medication) but there are outbursts that can turn violent, specifically when combined with alcohol or other illicit drugs.

 

It can be emotionally draining to be in a relationship with someone with bipolar disorder (marriage, dating, friendships) so you have to decide for yourself if you are willing to accept those terms.

I thought self-harmers tended to be people with borderline disorder. Manic depressives have been renamed as bipolar disorder.

Clinically, they are, and are generally classified as a mood disorder.

 

OP, with most people, there's some balance. I know a couple of people personally who are so afflicted and have for many years. It's instructive to know the signs of their "switch", which triggers a bad episode, and avoid those circumstances. This can occur even while medicated. The key is that, medicated, the person can resist tipping over into an "episode" of inappropriate behavior, rather just becomes mildly annoying, which isn't an issue when you love someone.

 

This guy sounds severely afflicted and medicated or he's unmedicated. Either way, I'd tread carefully
