sibernox Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Hey everyone My friend is registering a soccer team in a 6v6 soccer league this summer. Problem is, my cardio is absolute crap and I hate letting my team down cause i failed to cover my man or something. I used to play outdoor soccer but haven't played in over 7 years. What do you think I should do? I don't have much time to get in shape because the season starts in 2 weeks. I do wana play but don't wana let my team down. Any advice? thanks
TaraMaiden Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Just some observations... Well...If you play in your current condition, you would still be letting the team down. Are they all really much fitter than you? Is it a professional thing, with much reputation riding on the results? Is this actually not a good way to get into shape? As the season progresses, surely, your fitness level would also rise, would it not? As long as of course, you are attending the training sessions! Talk to your friend about your concerns.... ask his advice. _/l\_
MissConduct Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 What resources do you have readily available to you to get a head start on your cardio and endurance in the next two weeks? Do you live in a place where you can go for a run or skip rope (excellent for building up endurance) or climb stairs? You just need something that will get your heart rate up. Every boyfriend that I had has played soccer, or played a sport for fun. They were all in relative shape when starting out the season (usually after winter) and going out to the games I noticed all the guys in the team with the exception of handful were sluggish and not in top performance state yet later in the season they were kicking butt. SO go for it! Don't get discouraged I bet a lot of guys are in the same boat. If you can work on your cardio every day for the next two weeks I know you will notice a difference in your endurance level even just in two weeks. I recently started working out again. I used to work out all the time and had an accident and could not for the longest time, but when starting again in the first few weeks alone I saw a significant change in my level of endurance. All you need is a few weeks and keep at it every day.
Author sibernox Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 I can't really go on jogs where I live, but I do own a Wii fit which I started using 2 days ago. I know it's not the best, but today I was on it for 20 minutes and my legs really hurt now. So I guess something is working. I guess I could buy a jump rope, does that really work? What kind of reps would you recommend? Thing is, I'm not in relative shape. I'm in very bad shape. I start breathing heavily after going up my flight of stairs (10 steps or so). It's really bad. And I don't really know if they're in better shape than me, but it seems 90% of people I meet are in better shape than me. I only know 2 of the guys that will be playing on the team, which is why I'm even more worried about embarassing myself. And the league is only recreational, but still, my friend said it can get "pretty intense". Thank you both for your replies, really really appreciate it. If you have any more tips it would be extremely helpful.
MissConduct Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 That's great sibernox, whatever it takes to get that heart going in the next couple of weeks. You have to think you will be out on the field at 20 mins intervals possibly longer depending on the number of extra players so you want endurance. But don't sweat it everyone is prob in the same boat if it is anything like my ex's teams LOL I swear by rope skipping, it is EXCELLENT cardio workout. You can get a rope at any sports store for very cheap. You just go for as long as your feet wont get tangled in the jump That's what I do. Eventually you get better at it the more you concentrate and you can just go go go until you feel exhausted. Skipping rope for 15 mins a day do it one minute intervals and rest for half minute in between and then go again. It does the trick it is the equivalent of running on a treadmill for 30 mins. I used to do kickboxing and kipping rope was part of the pretrianing it gives you so much endurance. Have fun I bet in two weeks you'll clean house! You won't embarass yourself it's a friendly you will do just fine. It's fun! I wanted to play seeing my guys play.

If your breathing is laboured after a short flight of stairs, this is hardly normal.... The doctor can tell you IF there is a situation that might be addressed, and also perhaps recommend a fitness regime and change of diet. That way, you might even have a legitimate reason for continuing to become fit, but in your own way - not in this league.... Really. Get a check up. It will point you in the good direction.
MissConduct Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 If your breathing is laboured after a short flight of stairs, this is hardly normal.... It sounds pretty normal, if you are in as bad shape as he says he is. Sounds more like he slowly has to build his cardio up again. I failed to mention in my last post you build to the rope skipping you won't be doing 15mins at one minute intervals off the bat, start off with 10 mins and do shorter spurts if you feel you get out of breath quickly. Each day a little more. Easy does it. how old are you siber if you don't mind saying, and do you smoke by any chance or are you overweight? Or just plain old out of shape fitness wise?
Author sibernox Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 I'm 20 years old. I don't smoke, and I recently became a vegetarian, so I eat as well as I can. I'm 6'1 and 235 pounds. I checked my BMI and it said I'm obese. But I'm really not fat. I mean, I do have a bit of a belly, but not 'obese'. I don't think a BMI Calculator takes into account muscle mass, so that might be it. I used to work out a couple of years ago, but haven't been active at all in a long time. Do you think I should work out tomorrow as well even though my legs hurt cause of today's workout? I have my first practice with my new team this weekend and I don't wana be worn out before it even starts, so should I still work out tomorrow? Thank you once again for your replies, really appreciate it.

LOL those BMI charts are retraded don't pay too much attention to them, my ex was 6,0 and weighed 220 and had a kick-ass body on him a bit of a tummy, I mean a teeny tiny bit pooch and hot muscular legs like a soccer player. You are fine. I suspected you would be young and just out of shape fitnesswise because you mentioned having the Wii fit You're just a littler rusty that's all. So here's what I would do, listen to your body, if your leg muscles hurt today wait until the pain goes down a bit. You must always strech before you do any sort of exercise to avoid aches and pains, look up "warm up stretching leg exercises" online or on youtube and you can see diagrams of vids of stretches to do on the spot and you should always spend a good 3-5mins on stretches alone and warming up your leg muscles (or whatever group you will be working out), that is how you avoid the pain. The pain is from the microscopic tears that happen to our muscles when we perform new exercices, and this is normal this is how your muscle gains strength and heals. But you should now let it heal for a few days until the pain is almost gone. If you try out is later this week maybe take it easy til then or the pain subsides. You don't wanna to try out with wobbly legs.. Then once the pain goes away you slowly start again, and always remember to stretch and warm up the muscles first that's how you avoid pain and injury. Have fun!
Author sibernox Posted April 30, 2009 Author Posted April 30, 2009 Hehe, I would say I'm a bit more than just 'rusty'. Yeah, I took it easy today and just did some yoga to relax some tension in my muscles. Hopefully the pain inmy legs will go away by tomorrow. Thanks again. Oh yeah, if you have any more tips on exercises I could do at home, that'd be very helpful. I especially like the jump rope idea 'cause it won't take too much space to do. Thanks!
