This is wonderfully positive, Mea!

How is your monkey Mind??

Are you finding the calmness extends into other times, when you are not meditating....?

Maybe your friend will see the difference soon!

(of course, this is not the object of the exercise... we do not meditate for others....! :D )

Yes it's positive.:) My monkey mind had slowed down. I'm learning to use the word "Stop" alot and the word "Thinking".

Why do you want to meditate? in order to relax and achieve peace? Your brain can relax if you do something that engages it just enough to get it off of more stressful things, but still keep you relaxed. It can be puzzle games, music, movies, dancing, etc. What's the difference between thinking about your breathing or thinking about something small and unimportant? You can't really force your mind to think about absolutely nothing. On a subconscious level, it continues to think.

The problem doesn't lie in the fact that we're thinking, but what things come to our mind. Our minds act as our enemies because of fears. We cherish our fears even when we do something good or work on our goals (e.g. I am going to law school because I fear that I will be bored, poor, unsafe, etc. if I do nothing). What I am saying is that we live with fear and that's part of life, just like it is for any animal. The best way to overcome any fear is to face it.

Being honest with yourself is the first step in creating peace of mind. We ignore the good stuff in our lives and focus on our problems because we think that problems need our imediate attention. Kinda like when we were at school and if we knew something, we moved onto the material we didn't know well. We also ignore our qualities and focus on our faults. Tell a woman she has beautiful eyes and she'll forget about the compliment on the same day because she already knows she has beautiful eyes (unless if she doesn't - because it'd be novelty for her). Tell her she has cellulite, and she'll think about your comment for days or weeks, even though she knows she has it. When somebody is nice to us, we take it for granted because we think this is how life should be. When we face rudeness, we get very upset, because we're convinced that this is NOT how life should be. It's all about (not) accepting reality. We are not afraid that we might die at age 95 - we HOPE we'll die at that age, because we realize that life must end at some point. But we can't accept that we might die today. We cherish and feed our fears for many things. We want to relax, meditate, laugh, party, drink, whatever your thing is... because we want to forget about our pain (past), troubles (present), and fears (future).

Meditation should be a tool to find true peace of mind - to accept the reality of the past, present, and future; the reality of our world and our lives. AND the reality of our fears. Meditation has a purpose to remind you that you exist at this moment even if you do and think nothing. It's philosophical and existential at the same time. Meditation doesn't have the purpose of helping you to relax before you go back to your hectic life schedule.

You know I sort of agree with you here but, I don't want to forget. There is nothing I'm trying to forget. I'm trying to learn how to relax my body in natural ways meditation is one of those ways.

Not true. The principles of meditation can be applied to everyday life in many ways.;)
