Ruby Slippers Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Not sure where to put this. Going to the funeral of a good friend's father this weekend. I haven't been to a funeral in years, so I'm not sure what to wear. I know it's not necessary to wear all black these days, but I do have a tasteful black dress that I could wear. I also have a nice black dress with various shades of blue and turquoise print. I have knee-high FLAT leather boots (sort of like these: http://www.merrell.com/US/en-US/ViewProduct.mvc.aspx/11519W/0/Womens/Plaza-Peak?galleryId=W-F) and closed-toe black heels with an ankle strap. All my other black shoes are too strappy/sexy. I'd rather wear the boots, as they are more comfortable. Are the boots appropriate? They do cover more skin, but I'm not sure if knee-high boots are too much on the sexy side for a funeral. What do you think?
Trialbyfire Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I wouldn't wear those boots with any kind of tailored dress, not because they're too sexy but because of the sole/heel combination being too casual. Why not wear the boots with dark dress pants?
Star Gazer Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I agree with TBF. Either pair the boots with black dress pants, or wear the closed toe heels with the tailored dress. I'd also skip anything with print, or anything that has a bright "cheery" color (like turquoise) in it.

Why not wear the boots with dark dress pants? I can't find my boots online, but they go perfectly with the dress I have in mind, which is draped rather than tailored. Just not sure if they're funeral appropriate. I don't know about the shoes because they have pointy toes and I think the ankle strap makes them pretty sexy. The only dressier conservative clothes I have are things like business suits and pinstripe pants, which seem totally out of place at a funeral. Hmmm.
era Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Ummm...those look like snow boots, hun. It's because of their weather-resistant, moulded rubber sole. I think they would be appropiate under pants.
Author Ruby Slippers Posted April 23, 2009 Author Posted April 23, 2009 OK, the ones I have don't have that exact sole. They're flat and a bit dressier. And the dress is versatile and can be dressed down or up. I am obviously not very good at describing clothing. I am from the South and just moved to the North fairly recently. I still haven't exactly figured out how to dress for the winter up here. I guess I will just try on the boots and the heels and see which looks better. I don't feel that pants would be the best idea, but maybe.
Author Ruby Slippers Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 Yeah, the boots and dress totally work together, but not for a funeral. I put 'em on and looked like I was ready to get down in da club. I went with black pants, black flats, and a simple black top.
