theraven Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 So I will tell you right now that this post has nothing to do with marriage and life partnerships... I'm telling you in advance so you know and can decide now if you want to read it or not. I'm posting in this Forum because I figured this forum would have grown-up, experienced people with the subject that I need help with.. I'm a senior in high school and I really need help deciding what I want to do. My main concern is deciding my major. I need to decide my major now so I can decide what college I will attend, since some colleges may not have a major that I choose. I really would love a job that pays well. I would love to make a 6 digit income. I'm not asking for millions of dollars, just a pretty decent income. My dad makes about $130,000 a year and we are struggling a lot right now, so I guess this is the reason that I want to make a pretty good income. It's not all about the money, either. I want to do something I love and enjoy and could do for years. I love Math and I'm really good at it. I'm already considering Engineering, just to let you know. But that's all I really got right now. I need more options. I know I didn't really give you much information about myself. I don't really know what to say. Maybe you can't help me because I didn't really give you information about me, and that's okay, but any advice on how I can figure out what the heck I want to do? Cause I have literally NO idea right now.
65tr6 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I'm already considering Engineering, just to let you know. . I am an engineer....wait a minute..not anymore ! I abandoned that about 8 years ago when i jumped ships and moved to IT. Best move I ever made. Look it is very natural for folks who are good in Math to consider engineering...I did that. But times have changed. There is no guarantee that you will make 6 figures out of the engineering college. HIGHLY unlikely. Even with a masters that is. As regards to your father, with $130K and still struggling - there could be number of reasons. You could make $50K a year and save more than what some one who makes $130K. But then that is a separate thread by itself. Let me say this. When I was your age my goal was to get into a good school....engineering. I did not think much about how much I was going to make after I graduated. That came much later I joined the college. Sure enough I landed with one of the best jobs out there. What is your goal ? Make money, become engineer or go to a good school and get great eduction ? Who is going to fund you through college ? Can you get a scholarship ? (seems like you are bright enough to land one). What other areas of interest do you have apart from engineering ?
Author theraven Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Honestly, my goal is to make money. I want to make good money, but also be able to do something I love and can enjoy. About the question about other interest besides engineering: I'm not really sure. That's the thing. I don't exactly know what's out there to interest me. That's why I need help. All I can tell you is that anything that has to do with Science does NOT interest me. I really don't even know what to say right now... I don't know what I want to do.
jerbear Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Try an econ major or finance major with a language minor. After that get an MBA then be a entrepreneur by writing business plan in school and then go execute it. If you "want" $130k post college, the world better know the name.
Mr. Lucky Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I really would love a job that pays well. I would love to make a 6 digit income. I'm not asking for millions of dollars, just a pretty decent income. You've got it backwards. You need to find a career that you really like, otherwise no amount of money will be worth the daily drudgery. If you're really motivated and stand out in your field, the financial rewards will follow... Mr. Lucky
Queen of Hearts Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Try an econ major or finance major with a language minor. I would suggest getting your degree in accounting, then becoming a CPA. Once you have many years of public tax accounting experience, get your law degree and become a tax attorney. The amount of money people will spend on a good lawyer to fight the IRS is rediculous. My professor who did just this retired at the age of 45 with so much money he teaches because he needs something to do....
