NoIDidn't Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Some abandoned religions are refered to as myths. Most myths never had any relationship to any religion at all. We call the Roman and Greek stories about their gods myths. But we also call the mistaken belief that a man can be cured of AIDS via sex with a virgin a myth too. Religion and Myth aren't interchangeable. I think Cult is more appropriate when one wants to discredit a religion. Not Myth.
dunstable Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 My definition of myth would be a story that most informed people believe to be fictional. I would define a religion as a set of beliefs and practices centered on stories of the supernatural (where supernatural means not subject to natural laws). Since I don't believe in the supernatural, I have to conclude that all religions are based on myths.
I Luv the Chariot OH Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 Since I don't believe in the supernatural, I have to conclude that all religions are based on myths. Take out "based on", and you have my feelings. Do my eyes decieve me, or did a hardcore Christian fundie just say all religions are real? If that's the case, why should people of different religions have to go to the supposed Christian hell?
westernxer Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 Fundamentally speaking... there aren't any differences, aside from the aspect of monotheism vs polytheism.
dunstable Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 anything is possible No it is not. As rational beings, we should not believe everything we hear but demand good solid evidence.
dunstable Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Religion and Myth aren't interchangeable. Why not? Please explain the difference.
