redant Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Can it work if one person believes in God and the other in New age, planetary, extraterrestrial type stuff?
JamesM Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Not in the sense of a complete marriage...unless one person conforms to the other person's beliefs.
Author redant Posted March 30, 2009 Author Posted March 30, 2009 How do you know that? Anyone else? That sucks.
JamesM Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 How do you know that? Anyone else? That sucks. Because I have personally witnessed a number of divorces that were a direct result of differing religious beliefs. Think down the road...children. How will they be raised? It WILL matter. If one believes there is a personal God and one believes we are God, then how can they walk side by side without this being either a topic avoided or a topic of argument? If you are looking for a justification to continue a relationship, then you do have a choice. My own personal observances and experiences show that the likelihood of it surviving are slip and if it does there will be a lot of heartbreak.
bean1 Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I had a long-term relationship that ended because he was uber-Christian and I am agnostic/athiest/don't care either way in regards to religion. He couldn't handle me going to hell(?) and couldn't allow his children being raised by a non-Christian mother. Those issues didn't really matter in the first few years, but as time went on and the prospect of marriage and children came up, it was a dealbreaker for him. Although I'm not sure if he used that as an excuse or not because he started dating a Wiccan girl a week later (I suspect a bit sooner than that)! Now he's marrying a Christian girl. LOL I guess some guys have to go to the darkside before they can see the light!
Sam Spade Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Can it work if one person believes in God and the other in New age, planetary, extraterrestrial type stuff? Depends. If either side takes themselves too seriously and is fundamentalist about whatever stuff they believe in - then no, it can't work . If they simply have somewhat different spiritual orientations but deal with every day life realistically, as it comes - then no problem . I wouldn't even worry about the latter scenario, but would run away from the former .
