blind_otter Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I am doing the march of dimes walk for babies this saturday - I am the team leader. The walk is about 8 miles. I am planning on taking my son with me, it will probably take longer to do the walk (a few friends are on my team) but since he loves walks so much, I thought he would enjoy it. I'm borrowing a friend's jogging stroller. I'm also taking the moby (baby carrier) just in case he freaks out and needs to be held. Any tips? Anyone do anything similar with a small one?
LovieDove24 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Hey Blind Otter! Thats awesome that you are doing that with your son. Just curious, whats your son's birthday? I also have a nine month old she was born June 2nd. Anyways, I am a little concerned about how long its going to take to walk 8 miles, do you have an estimate? I assume you don't breastfeed anymore? Formula instead? I'm not sure how charity walks work...are you allowed to take breaks for food and diaper changing? If not, I'd say nix your little one. As much as he'd enjoy the scenery you may find it way more hassle than its worth. I know I can usually only manage 2-3 hour outings with my little one before the crap hits the fan. And btw, he's fricken adorable

And btw, he's fricken adorable It should take about 4 hours - I go on 2-3 mile walks regularly and it takes about 20-30 minutes per mile, usually when I have him in a moby ON me, so I would likely walk a bit faster if he's in a stroller. I still breastfeed, no formula. But he is also a good eater (all of a sudden) and loves cheerios, frozen blueberries and frozen peach slices in that munchkin fresh food feeder (mesh bag sort of pacifier thing - helps to prevent choking). They have stations set up for taking breaks - little tents along the way with water and chairs.
quankanne Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 take something to keep him entertained, to keep fed and hydrated and LOTS OF SUNSCREEN for the both of you. if baby otter likes his walks, it sounds like he's really gonna enjoy this.
Meaplus3 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Yes. I've done a few events much like the one your doing when my kids were babies. I'd make sure you have plenty of snacks and drinks available for little otter. Also, they make these real cute little clip on toys that attach easy to a stroller that may keep his attention if things get hairy. I'd also bring along an extra binky just in case you lose one. My kids had a habit of tossing their binkys as we were rolling along. Have fun. Mea:)
laRubiaBonita Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 an umbrella so baby B_O is shaded.... and a hat, and sunscreen- for you and baby..... a water bottle with a mister.... you can never be too misted... and some towels to wipe sweat
Author blind_otter Posted March 28, 2009 Author Posted March 28, 2009 Well we managed to make it halfway before I had to call S/O to come pick us up, my son got to the point where he didn't want to be in the Moby, didn't want to be in the stroller - just wanted to be held. I can't hold him on my hip and walk 4 miles, though. Well I could, but it wouldn't be comfortable for anyone. I had fun but it was stressful. When we got there at 7:45am it seemed like there were thousands of people at the registration area and my son was a bit overwhelmed because normally that is around the time he wakes up. He was a bit out of it, and there was loud techno music blasting from these huge speakers right by the registration tent. He hates techno, by the way, it seems to make him agitated. Then there was a bottleneck at the start and it took about 10 minutes to actually get to the street to start walking. People were pretty pushy for it being a charity event and all that. My S/O happened to drive by while we were walking and stopped to adjust the front wheel of the jogging stroller for me, which was nice because it was pulling to the left. He was going to garage sales. He also met us at the front of our neighborhood because the walk went right past there, and took unnecessary items home and made the baby laugh. But after he saw his Dad, my son started being restless. He needs crawling time, I think, he just didn't like being confined. He kept grabbing both sides of the stroller and trying to pull himself out. I had his favorite foods - blueberries, cheerios, peaches. He wasn't having any of it. He wanted to nurse, but when I stopped to nurse him he would pull off and look at the people. So by the time we had gone 4 miles I knew he would probably need to go home. He was super tired, but he wouldn't let himself fall asleep because there was so much going on. Poor baby. Plus, he's teething so he's not the happiest baby in the world right now. But S/O came and picked us up and as soon as I got home and put my son in bed he fell fast asleep. My friends on my team went ahead and are finishing the walk.
johan Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 What's this?? A quitter? I can understand the baby not making it. But you?? This is unacceptable. You go drag your ass back out there and finish that walk! Now! No excuses!
