Sam Spade Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 So I finally watched this movie yesterday, and I thought it was pretty good. However, I'm not sure if the fact of me liking it just provides additional evidence of my being a chauvinist pig, given the female characters: Female character # 1. Perpetually dissatisfied with relationships. Does not know what she wants, but knows what she doesn't. Any relationship of hers ends up with her beginning to feel "restless" and moving on. Female character # 2. Seemingly down to earth, in love with her fiance, understands the meaning of word commitment. Until it takes a suave euro-cat to get her to cheat on her fiance in about 2 days' time, that is. She marries anyway, probably to become like Female character # 3. 40+ wife who loves but "is not in love" with her husband. Female character # 4. The crazy ex that will never go away. That pretty much sums up the common complaints voiced on these boards . The director and the actresses (except fot ScarJo ) did a great job in making the characters look mostly endearing rather than mostly pathetic. I've dated # 1, but I'm pretty sure I'll end up with # 3:laugh:, (though there is hope - my gf thought all of them were ridiculous ) So I hope that there are more types of female types out there than the ones depicted in the movie . Okay, no problem I understand that things are exagerrated to make a point, but that's a perpetual human problem - the tension between responsibilities and the vague longings for something different. So, nobody deserves more than anybody else to indulge , but somehow, it is always the girls that end up more vulnerable, wrecking their own and others' lives in the process (but that's okay ).
Cherished Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Ummm...it's just a movie....and men pull the "just not in love" thing after so many years of marriage, also, it's just that men are more dramatic about it when the woman is the one who falls out of love.
sally4sara Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Spade, I think its awesome that you are questioning yourself and the ideals you were taught, even if it was just a movie. Whatever provokes you to look within yourself is worthwhile.
GoodOnPaper Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Found the movie highly depressing. Especially this . . . Female character # 2. Seemingly down to earth, in love with her fiance, understands the meaning of word commitment. Until it takes a suave euro-cat to get her to cheat on her fiance in about 2 days' time, that is. The message seemed to be that from the male side, you're out of luck if you are not a suave euro-cat.
