Suppose I'd like to purchase an online business with an appropriate website, but there is one important small change I'd like to perform (hypothetically) -ie. website address/name.

If I decide to change the name of the website/URL, then:

(1) How will this effect the website?

(2) Will this hinder online traffic?

(3) How will viewers be able to access new website name/URL?

(4) Any other information that I need to know about purchasing/changing a website?

This post may sound ignorant, but I don't know much about this "Online Business" stuff. Thank you.

With no details about the business. I'd say that the url website probably encomapases alot if not all of the value of the company. What other aspect of the business would you be purchasing besides the website, equipment, email lists, excisting customers etc. If there's not much of the previous I'd say your just better making the site yourself. I dont see any value of purchasing a website unless it already gets alot of traffic and in that case changing the name would probably be damaging.

Alot of stuff about making money online is a scam and from the little info here, this sounds like a scam as well.

You can keep the current address and direct it to your new address...therefore having two addresses. You shouldn't buy an Internet business if you're going to get rid of the address it does business under. So keep the current address and promote your new address. Your webmaster will know exactly how to do this...it's called a redirect. You new address will cost you very little. Good luck!

Don't spend a lot of money buying a web site that you could have started yourself unless it's doing a hell of a lot of business and your accountant has looked closely at the books.

Yes setting up a redirect is very simple and cheap. Sounds like you've got a steep learning curve ahead of you.
