Trialbyfire Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 pearl jam -black, then just watch a show/movie that shows someone going through the same thing, always makes me feel better, not alone. Excellent tune but not really an inspirational one to pull yourself out of sadness. If anything, it's touches that tragic chord in you. I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know someday you'll be a star in someone else's sky But why, why, why can't it be Why can't it be mine?

shadowplay Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Some of my all time fave breakup tunes: Elliott Smith's "Waltz #1" beautifully describes the aftermath of a break up: Every time the day Darkens down and goes away Pictures open in my head Of me and you, silent and cliche All the things we did and didn't say Covered by what we did and didn't do Going through every out I used to Cope to make the repetition stop What was I supposed to say? Now I never leave my zone We're both alone, I'm going home I wish I'd never seen your face. The music itself has this haunting broken music box quality that perfectly fits the words. "For No One" by the Beatles (apparently about the end of Paul's relationship with Jane Asher) Your day breaks, your mind aches You find that all her words of kindness linger on When she no longer needs you "The Scientist" by Coldplay (yes, one of their only songs that I like ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3Kd7IGPyeg Oh and I rush to the start. Runnin' in circles, Chasin' tails Comin' back as we are The music video is particularly poignant, about the protagonist visiting the scene of a car crash the killed his gf (which symbolizes the end of their relationship). The whole thing is shot in reverse. It's about re-examining obsessively what went wrong in the aftermath of a split, trying fruitlessly to put the pieces back together. "Black Star" by Radiohead "The Dangling Conversation" by Simon and Garfunkel Some of the lyrics are a bit heavy-handed, but overall it captures the quiet way in which people can fall out of love: It's a still life water color, Of a now late afternoon, As the sun shines through the curtained lace And shadows wash the room. And we sit and drink our coffee Couched in our indifference, Like shells upon the shore You can hear the ocean roar In the dangling conversation And the superficial sighs, Are the borders of our lives. And how the room is softly faded And I only kiss your shadow, I cannot feel your hand, You're a stranger now unto me Lost in the dangling conversation. And the superficial sighs, In the borders of our lives. There are a bunch of others too...

reservoirdog1 Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 When I had to cope with the end of my marriage, when I wanted to feel better I avoided anything romantic or sappy, anything where the guy gets the girl, etc. That included music and movies. Action movies helped. There's lots of movies out there to fit that bill. As for music: Guns N' Roses -- You Could Be Mine, I Don't Care About You Rage Against The Machine -- Killing in the Name Metallica -- So What Marilyn Manson -- The Beautiful People AC/DC -- Shot Down in Flames Linkin Park -- In The End
