Well AOL had an article this morning about men and their aging.

Kids of Older Dads May Have Lower IQs

s: 109filed under: HEALTH NEWS, SCIENCE NEWSPrintShareText SizeAAA

HONG KONG, (March 9) - Children of older fathers appear to perform less well in intelligence tests during infancy and childhood, a study by researchers in Australia shows.

In contrast, the study found that children with older mothers tended to gain higher scores in the same tests designed to measure the ability to think and reason, including concentration, learning, memory, speaking and reading skills.

en and women are having children later particularly in developed countries. But while the effects of having children later for women are widely discussed, consequences of increased paternal age are not as well known.

Recent studies have drawn links between older fathers and specific health problems in their children, including birth deformities and cancer, as well as neuropsychiatric conditions such as autism and schizophrenia.

In the study, the researchers analysed data from intelligence tests taken by 33,437 children who were born between 1959 and 1965 in the United States.

The children were tested at 8 months, 4 years and 7 years and were assessed for their sensory discrimination, hand-eye coordination, reading, spelling and arithmetic ability.

They found that the older the father, the more likely the child would have lower scores on the various tests.

In contrast, the older the mother, the higher the scores of the child in the cognitive tests.

"Previous researchers have suggested that the children of older mothers may perform better because they experience a more nurturing home environment; if this is the case, this study suggests that children of older fathers do not necessarily experience the same benefit," the researchers wrote in a statement.

The researchers said the lower scores obtained by offspring of older men may have to do with mutation.

"Unlike a woman's eggs which are formed when she herself is in the womb, a man's sperm accumulates over his lifetime, which previous studies have suggested can mean increased incidence of mutations in the sperm at an older age," they wrote.

The study was published in the open-access journal PLoS Medicine.

I wonder if that's for guys who hold their sperm for extended periods of time because I empty mine out almost every day. That's about 3 ejaculations because only a percentage comes out for the first two. Overall I think this has no relevance in the "superiority" argument and makes you look even more vicious than Hillary Clinton. Maybe you should move to another planet and claim female supremacy.

Firstly, the article said nothing about it being for men that hold their sperm or not. It said that as men age, their sperm has more of a chance to mutate while women's eggs remain the same since with what they were born with.

Secondly, this has nothing to do with who beats who. I said at the end, who gets the last laugh was God. Because he makes sure neither men or women win and that we have to work together to make something work. The way he balances men and women out to keep things fair is amazing.

I don't want to "beat" men out. But I do want respect from men.

Lastly, there was not one thing vicious in that post. It was an article based on science. The vicious one seems to be your comments.

I'm sure alot of men respect you. I just don't understand why you're always leading an attack on the male sex. Don't take lifes shortcomings out on men sweetie, I think its hilarious when you try your best to spite male posters. From what I heard the sperm stays pretty healthy as long as its in cool temperatures. Maybe you can have your guy dangle his nuts over your heart, its an icebox in there.

To be fair, a quick look around the shack and you will find a few men who constantly instigate attacks against women. (that one thread about men reaching their peek, or the others about career women being examples.)

IDK..... my dad was 43 when my mom became pregnant for the first time at 36. This was back in the 1950's.

Our psychologist, upon interviewing us for MC, was surprised at how healthy I've been, physically and mentally. I am too, especially since I work in a pretty toxic physical environment.

I'd have no qualms being an older parent (biologically) if I were so blessed. I think, like with my parents, nurture has just as much to do with the outcome of the child as nature (genetics) does, even for children who are "less than perfect".

Is this another of those "men vs women" threads? Oy... :(

Perhaps because so many of the guys here attack women and basically want to point out what little value we have yet toot their own horn about how wonderful they are. My posts have never been about who was better. Maybe your have been and that's why you look at it that way. Mine have always been about being fair to the other sex and trying to learn to work with them, not against them. If you want to turn this into personal attacks and tell me I am cold hearted, you can. But please note that I never persoanally attacked you and your only making yourself look unreasonable.

Regardless, you have yet to make a comment about the article directly and have resorted to comments about who you think I am as a person.

I've said something similar (I forgot which thread) that, even though older men can have young chicks.. the quality of their sperm is affected by age. So.. I'm not surprised at this article.. I always thought it makes sense.. older women are more susceptible to have an handicapped child.. makes sense since the 'egg' is older.. but what about 'old sperm'... :p

It's nature..

I would agree. I think even oung healthy parents can hav childen that are handicapped or so on. There are too many factors we just don't understand or give credit to.

In sociology, we tend to question everything and IQ tests are one of them. I believe intelligence is 5% biology and 45% socialization and 50% society. As in, "intelligence" is defined by society. So, if I wanted to explain why children of older dads fare lower on IQ tests, I would want to know a few things about 1)their parenting styles 2) the parenting styles privileged by the test themselves.

It could be that IQ tests - which change every year - are better at tracking current changes in parental styles; ie, that younger dads are usually more involved in raising their children then older dads.

I would also like to see numbers about which social classes tend to have children younger and older according to gender. We know upper-class highly educated women have children later in life. Social class would then explain why their children fare well on IQ tests. I don't know the trends for men.

But all in all, fortunately, each life is unique. If I am so lucky as to have children, I'm sure I'll be crazy about them no matter their IQ and I'm sure you can lead a happy fulfilling life without being the smartest in the lot.

The guy who put a bunch of little soldiers in cold storage when he was in his early 20s.

From what I understand - correct me if I'm wrong - the women's eggs are exposed to environmental and lifetsyle related toxins (drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, prescription medication) as they accumulate, though. So I'd say that these two factors probably even out.

Looking back, TBH, I think the structuring of childhood had the most profound impact. Yes, dad was gone every day and sometimes traveled. However, when he was there, from an early age (pre-school), he was actively involved in intellectual and physical development. It was structured and consistent, whether it be learning 10 new words out of the dictionary, teaching me new words and phrases in Latin, going over tools how to perform mathematics in my head or throwing a football in the yard. Mom took care of the social nurturing and support. Each had their "job" as a parent and they shared them seemlessly and worked as a team, playing to each parent's strengths. Obviously, no one's life is perfect, but I think a distinct advantage of older parents is the life experience they bring to the table, along with the potential for more emotional maturity and stability. Perhaps genetics are against them. Hey, just another life challenge :)

Almost without exception, every woman who has heard about my childhood has remarked "you were effing Beaver Cleaver" :DIDK; to me, I was just another normal kid, the one on the tricycle :)

i agree, thus the reason older women have a higher rate of children with birth defects, downs syndrome, etc.

Do you put much faith in intelligence tests? Because there is a MUCH larger correlation between race and intelligence tests, than age of the father.

So I am guessing either both hypothesis are correct, or neither.

i'm not challenging you. i'm just really curious about this statement you made.

My belief is if you're in love in a solid relationship, go ahead and have kids. You can't look at "statistics" and "science" to navigate every aspect of your life.

If you are in love with an older man and you want to have kids, no harm in trying.

"Stats" and "science" I think just make people too afraid to live their lives as they want. You can't live every aspect of your life.

OK so 23 year old women with 23 year old men have the smartest babies. OK what if you're a decade above that age?

Are you supposed to just not have kids, even though it will bring you ultimate happiness?

NO, and it is scary if you live your life that way.

Go for what you want in life.

Life is a risk.

Young people have whacked up in the head children, too, believe me, I teach their kids.

23yrd old women with 23yr old men may have the best GENETIC basis for smartest babies, but they don't have the same life experience as a couple in their 30s.... and stimulation and surroundings counts for alot in childrens intelligence, especially in the first 2 years of life. I don't think that study can be considered that accurate as they didn't seem to test the IQs of the parents themselves, which is a variable that can have an effect on the outcome.

I am 31 and my H is 35, and we are considered to be in the upper middle bracket for parents age. I am pregnant, and we have to have extra tests because of the fact that I am over 30 for downs etc.

H and I have a great relationship, professional jobs, financial security, a house, supportive families etc etc etc. This is THE right time for US- we didn't even know eachother when we 23.

Not entirely sure what the point of this thread was- to discuss the article or what?

I think that everybody should be euthanased by law at the age of 65. This will remove the gross problems associated with getting old and it will also force people to live more meaningful lives, including as far as relationships are concerned.

(I'm darn serious )

An interesting study. It appears to encourage the Demi/Ashton-style combination, for the best children!

Okay, in all seriousness, I think that people will breed when they find the compatible partner, if they're of any kind of breeding mentality. Whether the man or the woman is older, doesn't really matter. As long as both are in the same stage in life and maturity level.

OK, interesting article.

There, now with that out of the way, I find it even more interesting than the article that you think God gets a "laugh" out of saddling the children of older men with lower intelligence. Hilarious. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I have to imagine that this - being the substantial content of your own contribution to the original post - must indeed reveal a good deal about who you are as a person.

I get a laugh out of the fact that the OP believes that nonsense!!!!

Esp in this day and age.

God has nothing to do with our baby  and i hope it remains that way.
