TwinkletOes26 Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Ok im not talking about the actual interview im talking after i start working. I have dark skin so neutrals look like MUD on me lol. Is it ok to wear color to work as long as its not bright blue(although i could make blue wearable during the day i got skills lol)and pair it with a neutral shade? ALso purple compliments my skin tone is it ok to wear? I asked this question on my makeup forum and several ladies that work in offices said they wear whatever color they want they just make sure not to go above the crease. I dont anyways cos i have small eyes and going too far past my crease makes my eyes look smaller. I asked a HR manager and she said as long as i apply it to look nice dont go to far up my boss and coworkers wont even notice as long as im doing my job. I think its sad i have to even ponder this i should just have to focus on doing a good job anyways what about you business ladies? Oh i should mention the kind of job im gonna be looking for : social work I figured everyone will be so knee deep in cases that my eyeshadow will be the last thing on ppls minds LOL.
Trialbyfire Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Tasteful makeup of any kind is okay at the office. Just don't overdo it by caking it on and you'll be fine. I would avoid any glitter or drama, although some shine is fine.
Author TwinkletOes26 Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 thanks i dont do much glitter anways except like a glittery highlight color. ill just stay away from blue looks even though blue is my fav color lol...
2sure Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 If your make up looks professional ,put together , and not made up for evening it can enhance prodessional image. For future reference...although it is ok to ask the HR dept. about dress code if for some reason you have been unable to figure it out...I would not ask them for make up advice. It gives the idea that your makeup is as important to you as say...health insurance. You can bet they discussed your question after you left.
Star Gazer Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Personally, I don't think bright eyeshadow colors at work are very professional at all, even if lightly applied. I'd suggest keeping it as neutral on the eyes as possible. Save the pops of color for your lips and cheeks, but still understated. Granted, I use Trax (MAC) eyeshadow as the edge/crease color on most days at work, and it's a version of purple I suppose, but on my skin it doesn't look purple-purple at all. As for blue, stick with navy (still a neutral) and you'll be okay.

Star gazer i hate the way neutrals look on me they dont compliment my skin at all (think rhianna dark) i look like i rubbed mud on my eyelids or lighter neutrals look chalky ......I figured since purple looks good on my id apply it but not go to high or glittery. I have also been told by a woman who worked in an office for years that pairing neutrals with color is a good idea too. She said between my small eyes and glasses that someone would have to get right in my face (like too close for comfort lol) to notice anyways. Ive tried a navy blue look on me it looks great thats one look i have in my hat lol. My main concern is getting fired i mean if coworkers wanna have an issue with me over eyeshadow that their deal. Im at work to do my job not to make friends. Ill do that after work.Im not gonna go out of my way to be ugly but work is working not anything else lol. I am just worried about it bc neutrals make me look tired or that i didnt put ny effort into doing my face that morning. Colors make me look alive and fresh....i learned from my cosmetologist friend that color makes dark skin pop so ive mainly stuck to color my whole life. How about pinks? Would pinks be ok? i have one look thats pink and orange(this brings out the yellow undertines in my skin) that looks cute but not too loud. Maybe ill post pics on here with my different looks ideas and you guys can give me advice on specific looks. My mu forum friends are great but they all love color obviously so i want an unbias opinion. I agree with not asking the hr dept lol theyd prolly think im nuts lol and thats what i think about all day. Im just concerned bc this will be my first professional job back when i was a check out girl i wore anything on my eyes and it was fine. I know some women in offices dont wear makeup at all to work. Is this ok? i thought you had to wear makeup to look professional....im still confused lol ..... Anywho would it be ok to post some pics of various makeup looks i would wear to the office and tell me if they are ok or not? My mom is no help she doesnt wear makeup at all much now that shes retired.
Elyssa Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I have to agree with the rest of the opinions here that encourage the use of neutrals. If light colors don't look good on you, then go for darks, but steer clear of pinks, oranges and generally anything colorful. No matter how skilled you are in its application, they have no place in a professional setting and tend to look garish. Generally speaking, you should be able to wear most anything with your "work" make up and not have it clash. If you could do that, it means it's "neutral" enough. Navy, terracotta, beige, smoke, etc are all acceptable choices. As for whether you have to wear make up or not... if you have a perfect complexion and are young, you might not need it at all. Daytime makeup is generally used to cover up small imperfections, even out skin tone and provide a more groomed look. It is not meant to make you stand out or make a fashion statement. In most instances, I would not go beyond the following: Sheer or semi-sheer foundation, optional corrector for pimples and dark circles, mascara (dark brown, not black, unless your hair is black!), a neutral shade, a bit of blush and understated lip color (lip gloss best). Best of luck -E
Trialbyfire Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 http://www.nicewallpapers.info/pics/music/beyonce/beyonce_025.jpg Take a look at this pic of Beyoncé. I would tone it down a bit but she's wearing neutrals and it looks incredible on her dusky skin.
Author TwinkletOes26 Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 Suggestions on dark neutrals? Ive looked on youtube for neutral makeup tuts and they look dramatic lol.... Im 26 with not a lot of issues with my skin foundation actually causes me to break out. I stick with a tinted moisturizer. When i say wear color i mean like this : This girl is my age(27) and says she works in an office and claims this is an ok way to wear color.....is she right? I mean i darker than her (again think rhianna)....... anywho opinions on the look..... Thats pretty much how i apply my maeup during the day and night(at night i use more glitter and false lashes lol).
Author TwinkletOes26 Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 i liked the beyonce pic i like that look. This would be easier if i could just not wera anything LOL..... anywho Thanks for the advice guys you are being very helpful . Thank u
anne1707 Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I think something to consider is what kind of company you are working for. If it's a firm of accountants or lawyers then I think go for the neutrals. However if it is something like an advertising company then go for more colour. The culture of the organisation impacts on both dress code and make up.
Author TwinkletOes26 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 anne thats why im so confused i graduated with a degree in psychology so i will be doing social work and givernment programs that work with helping kids and stuff. Most of these places have a business casual dress code. I interned at a place called babies cant wait that helps developmentally delayed children and the boss wore open toed shoes and khahki pedal pushers lol. I mean her makeup was def professional but her clothes ....not so much but it was friday. Another woman that worked there wore bright red lipstick and no other makeup with a purple suit that looked like something madea would wear. Ive seen this type of dress at a lot of places around where i live in offices. Which is why im so confused...i mean are they really gonna throw a fit about purple e/s that doesnt pass the crease when my coworker is wearing a tight sweater and pedal pushers LOL? Its just all confusing cos you cant exactly follow the examples around here as reference. Yall are giving me good ideas though thank you thank you
anne1707 Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Well it sounds to me that it is a fairly relaxed style which is very much suited to the work you will be doing. Your key thing will obviously to be seen as approachable by the kids and not as some "stuffed up suit" (as I have to be in my job ). From the sounds of it, I think you could go for some subtle colour to test the water. I think a lot of this is more just nerves about the new job rather than the make up. Don't worry - the first day will be over before you know it.
Star Gazer Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 When i say wear color i mean like this : anywho opinions on the look..... Thats pretty much how i apply my maeup during the day and night(at night i use more glitter and false lashes lol). That bright color shadow is absolutely NOT appropriate for a social worker. Nope. Nu uh. I'm sorry, but I can now see why someone in HR would question your judgment if you wore something like that in your particular work environment. That look should be left to those working in teeny-bopper stores and behind the bar. Honestly. I think you're finding neutrals muddy and chalky because you're using flat/matte shadows. Try neutral colors with shimmer. They're illuminating and hide flaws. Go to your local department store and go to the Laura Mercier or Bobby Brown counters. They will help you.
Author TwinkletOes26 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 ~huggles~ thanks annie i havent gotten a job yet but im asking so when the first day comes ill be prepared. The hr manager was a family friend she wears very little makeup anyway(i dont think she knows how to apply makeup much)......I mean the closet things to being a stuffy suit is a secretary and i think ppl expect the secretary to wear dramatic makeup LOL LOL .....but yea i mean theres also a psychology center where ill be applying and i think the only ones who will be wearing suits are the actual psychologist lol. I have to get my masters at the least to do that. Ive noticed most jobs in the psych field have relaxed dresscodes i think its bc they have to work in the community and people dont feel comfortabloe with ppl in stuffy suits as they do with people in more casual like going to church casual clothing. Maybe ill do neutrals (ew) the first week then slowly sneak color in ... its strange a lot of the youtube gurus work in offices and this one is a teacher : they claim thy wear color all the time to work? HMMMMM i hope someone wouldnt lie about something so silly LOL

She just said it wouldnt matter as long as i dont look like mimi or walk in to work with a mini and fishnets lol. Your judgement comment seemed kinda mean if it was not meant to be please correct me i know this is the internet so we cant see faces. Anywho i have tried neutrals with shimmer as well even MAC neutral shimmers and they look like shimmering mud. The only neutral colors i have are gold and a brown thats one shade lighter than my skin. I was thinking of getting a coastal scents neutral palette they seem to have colors that look good on everyone. Ill try those Thank you for your help as well
Trialbyfire Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I've never worked or even entered a social worker's office environment, so I honestly don't know how a social worker would dress or wear her make up. My advice comes from a very conservative industry which is the Financial sector (banking and investing). With this in mind, that's a good idea to go in conservative, then see what everyone's wearing, so that you fit in with the environment.

From my internship i saw they were business casual unless they went to court. I will just wear neutrals then slowly very slowly stick color in. The worst they can say is dont wear that again.
donnamaybe Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 What I've found often works nicely to "tone down" a color that usually works best for you is to put a light overlay of light brown over the top. Works great!
Author TwinkletOes26 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 thanks thats also another thing i was thinking .... I mean my main thing is not getting in trouble ..if coworkers wanna have an issue with me over powdered colored mica then let them ill make friends outside of work(things work better that way i have learned LOL). I just dont wanna get fired. Thank u guys for being helpful
donnamaybe Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 It sounds to me that the bee-yotches are jealous. You probably have very pretty eyes, and to play them up to their potential (gasp!) has gotten their lips flapping.
Author TwinkletOes26 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 I dont have a job yet but i know about work place politics and how petty and childish some can be. I mean legally(several criminal justice courses) your job cant tell you how much makeup to wear because "subtle" is subjective also because makeup has nothing to do with job performance. I just dont want to get called into the office over purple eyeshadow. I mean neutrals make me look tired. Ive tried them when i was younger to start off and people would ask me was i sick....they also look like mud on my eyes lol. I mean i understand dont look like you are going to the club but i dont see why a sweep of light green would make people go nutters. I learned the main reason they say stick with neutrals is bc most people dont know how to apply color with out making it look like you have a date. I do i learned from my cosmetologist friend. She just say they key to daytime makeup is dont go too high at night go past your crease and use more glitter and add falsies LOL. Thank you for your help and your baby is oh so cute feel flattered i am usually not kid crazy but your baby is too cute i saw the pic and just instantly went awwwwww. Just wanna pinch cheeks...ok stepping away b4 i get too mushy lol ~huggles~
donnamaybe Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Color isn't the issue, IMO. Anyone with an artistic eye can do any color properly. If you pick the wrong color for your skin tone/eye color/hair color, ANYTHING could look garish. Another thing is blend, blend, blend! It helps as well if you take your highlight color (the one for your browbone just under the eyebrow) and sweep it lightly across your entire lid, eyebrow to lashes, AFTER you've applied all your normal eyeshadow colors.
Author TwinkletOes26 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 OHHHHHH thats a good idea as well ..ill try that too. The great thing about darker skin color makes it pop...i was thinking the first color to try is pink bc its light and girly and ill add brown and sweep the highlight color all over it. Thank you ill try this too Whats your job what colors do you wear to work ?
Star Gazer Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Your judgement comment seemed kinda mean if it was not meant to be please correct me i know this is the internet so we cant see faces. Well, it wasn't intended to be mean, but I'm not going to coddle you and tell you that women who may have a problem with your makeup are jealous. My judgment comment had nothing to do with the identity of your HR manager, but your judgment in how you present yourself in your work environment. Shocking purple simply is not appropriate in your line of work. You're looking for a career in social work. If there's any profession where your judgment is a critical skill/trait, it's social work. Anywho i have tried neutrals with shimmer as well even MAC neutral shimmers and they look like shimmering mud. I don't see how this can be at all. There are several dark skinned women at my office who wear neutral colors and look fabulous. I cannot fathom why you think shimmery MAC shadows look like mud. I can only assume you're uncomfortable with having the "real you" shine through. Why is that? Why are you hiding behind your makeup? That's a better question.
