Sarita12385 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Hi all. My husband is 29 years old and just went in to have a mole on his back removed and sent in for a pathology test to determine whether or not it's normal, precancerous or cancer already... I am just a nervous wreck. The doctor said he has to come back in 10 days for a follow up appointment, but in the meantime, if she doesn't call my husband, that's good news, if she DOES call, that's bad. I told him to call in on Friday regardless just to follow up. The waiting is the worst part. My worst fear is that it'll be melanoma or something and then we'll have a real problem on our hands. This is so stressful I'm trying to stay optomistic but you can't help but have the bad thoughts in the back of your mind. Anyone else ever have an experience like this?
Itsnotme Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I know how scared you must be. I have had two cancer scares. Both were fine but the waiting was so frightening. You have to try and remain optimistic. Keep very busy and try not to dwell on it. I know thats easier said than done, but you have to stay occupied or else you'll drive yourself nuts. And.......even if it is the worst (and I sincerely hope it's not) it's not necessarily bad. I have a friend who has had two cancerous moles removed. The last one was 5 yrs ago and he's fit and healthy and has had no more problems. I wish I could say more to make you feel better. I'll be thinking of you.
fral945 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I'm also 29, had 2 removed last year. I mentioned them to my primary doctor during a routine physical; they looked different from the other freckles/moles I have. She referred me to a dermatologist, who biopsied them and removed them. Mine were at the very, very early stages, where they were mainly just an eyesore, but I had them removed anyway. The earlier you catch those the better. As far as I know if you take preventative action and catch them early melanoma are 100% curable. I would think at your husband's age even if the test does come back positive, it won't be far enough along to be life threatening. They will just have to perform a 2nd biopsy to make sure all the cancerous cells are removed. I plan to have a skin cancer checkup every year. I'd recommend the same for your husband, especially if his test comes back positive.
Squirtal Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Hi Sarita Why did he have the mole removed? I ask this because I had a huge mole at the back of my neck on my hair line, I felt it kept changing and was in a dangerous area as Hairdressers would catch it. My doctor recommmended removing it and she did and then as routine sent it to be anaylsed. It was all okay...the cahnges were because I kepr rubbing it so it got irratated, that was it. Was this mole just in an awkward place that got rubbed or did it change a lot over a period of time? I hope everything is okay.
Author Sarita12385 Posted February 24, 2009 Author Posted February 24, 2009 Thank you all for such kind and helpful comments. He originally went to his dermotologist because this mole formed on his arms about 2 or 3 months ago out of nowhere, changed color, then became VERY itchy, so he scratched it and infected it The doctor was unable to analyze the mole because of the infection, so she gave him a topical antibiotic to get rid of the infection and told him to come back in a week (which was today). In the meantime, during that visit last week, she asked him if he ever had his whole body reviewed for other moles, etc, which he hadn't. So he stripped down and she found 2 on his back that she didn't like. She wasn't happy with the shape and color of them, so she wanted to remove 1 and send it up to pathology just to be on the safe side. I have to give the doctor credit, at least she was proactive. She told my husband that because he has so many little moles on his back, she wants to check him out every 6 months just for precaustionary purposes, which is fine by me!
