Isolde Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Yeah, I know I'm using Angelina Jolie as an example and that's not really the average person, but I think her photos provide the contrast I was looking for. So WHAT LOOK DO YOU LIKE BEST AND WHY? No/very little makeup--maybe just mascara and lip balm http://thebeautystop.com/celebrities-busted-without-makeup/ (scroll down a bit) Subtle makeup-some concealer and liner http://www.popular-pics.com/thumbnails/angelina-jolie-without-makeup-1.jpg Full makeup (yes, this looks natural, but believe me it is a full face) http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2006/features/magstories/060508/jolie/angelina_jolie320.jpg
bean1 Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I'm not a man, but I have always had the same response from men in relationships: "Don't wear makeup! You don't need it!" (from both my SO and the opinions of friend's SOs) Yet when they see Oompa Loompa cakeface or the typical airbrushed celebrity photo, they LOVE it. It has been my experience that most men are unable to see just how many layers of makeup "attractive" women really wear. A typical woman on a "night out" will wear face lotion, base foundation, powder setting foundation, concealer stick, eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow (x 3 colours), blush, lipliner, lipstick, and lipgloss! That's 11 applications! Only rarely do you see a woman who can look like that without Homer Simpson's makeup shotgun
bayouboi Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 none of the above. find a pic of her from tomb raider or wanted and it will prolly sell me on her
likestolaugh Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 it depends on the person. Some people look worse with lots of makeup, some look better.

That's 11 applications! Only rarely do you see a woman who can look like that without Homer Simpson's makeup shotgun I wear almost all of that quite often: * Tinted moisturizer * Under eye concealer * Setting translucent powder * Bronzer (summer) * Blush * Eyeliner * Eyeshadow * Mascara * Lipgloss And there's nothing "cake face" about my end result. It's all about application and how heavy (or light, in my case) your hand is. My BF claims he cannot tell a difference between my "made up" face and my bare face... but I certainly can. At the very least, I never leave the house without mascara and lipgloss on. I have blonde eyelashes...

Any of those guys that say "no make-up" is best are the ones checking out the done up hottie that walks past them on the street. I say, as a woman do what works for you and make no excuses for the tastes of everyone else. If wearing make-up works for you and you feel good in it then do it, if it doesn't then don't. Plus the other thing I find extremely wrong with those before and after photos that people do surveys on, is that the before picture is always just a BAD picture of a person where as the after pic is always a best pic. If I take a bad pic of a woman WITH make-up and compare it to a really good pic of the same woman without, then guess what? The no make-up pic will win. It's like all the infomercials the before is a miserable looking woman the after is all smiles, well DUHHHHH of course she looks better after she is smiling from ear to eat looking totally inviting! You take the EXACT same pic before and after make-up, with the exact same expression clothing and hair, and there isn't much of a difference for most women.
Trialbyfire Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I agree that they do the best/worst pics when they do the comparison. On the otherhand, everyone has to agree that Brooke Shields really, really needs makeup!
Author Isolde Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 Exactly, the survey was designed to see whether the full face (which most men don't recognize as a full face) is more popular than the minimal amount of makeup. But no one is actually answering the question
shadowplay Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I think guys are confused and think women are only wearing makeup when it's super obvious and way over the top. They don't realize how natural well-applied makeup looks and the difference it makes in how attractive they find a woman.
Author Isolde Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 I don't know, I think Brooke Shields looks fine, I think she would look best with a minimal amount of makeup, not that heavy bronzer and fake lashes. Kim Kardashian is really pretty without makeup, I find her ugly with. On the other hand, I think Angelina is a good example of someone who looks good without makeup, but knows how to use the proper techniques to look even better with that full face.

They don't realize how natural well-applied makeup looks and the difference it makes in how attractive they find a woman. I agree. My BFF takes 45 minutes to do her makeup, and even many women (the kind who have no clue how to appropriately apply it) think she's bare skinned on most days.

Oh man, did you see the pic of Cameron Diaz smiling without makeup in that first link? That can't be real can it!?
Star Gazer Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Here's another one of mainly "withouts": http://www.topsocialite.com/celebrities-without-makeup/ Giselle, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Julia Roberts all look gorgeous sans makeup. Kate Winslet looks awesome too - but she IS wearing makeup. See, THAT's the trick to applying makeup that looks like you're not wearing any!
CommitmentPhobe Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Sorry but how am I supposed to know about make-up?
bean1 Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Oh I'm not knocking tons of makeup, I wear even more than that (I use sunless tanners)! I just get a good kick out of girls who shave their eyebrows off, paint them back on, and have the orange ring around the face! The most important word in the female makeup language: BLEND.
Trialbyfire Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Here's another one of mainly "withouts": http://www.topsocialite.com/celebrities-without-makeup/ Giselle, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Julia Roberts all look gorgeous sans makeup. Kate Winslet looks awesome too - but she IS wearing makeup. See, THAT's the trick to applying makeup that looks like you're not wearing any! Quite a few of these women are wearing both lipgloss/stick and mascara. They're just not wearing full makeup, as you normally see them, when in the public eye for events, galas, in movies, etc. I think Sharon Stone looks wonderful in that pic. She def. wearing no makeup, has either or is turning 50.
fral945 Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 But no one is actually answering the question That's because the women here have hijacked your thread and started going off topic when the question you asked was for men's personal preferences (sorry ladies, you can continue gossiping, just had to point that out). I'm split on the pictures. Personally I think Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Garner, and Adriana Lima look better without the makeup. For the others, I think makeup is a good thing.
Tomcat33 Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Yeah poor Brooke that is an AWFUL pic of her, She DOES need makeup. But that after pic has got to go. See I looked at the pics again and in a lot of the pics the make-up pics look like these women are transformed into trannies. Tha make-up is WAY too intense. Then there is the pic of Drew B where she is clearly heavier in the before pic, choice is obvious, and the caption for Adriana Lima says "proof once more that even someone who’s supposed to be one of the prettiest ladies in the world looks super ordinary without an inch of makeup" "Super ordinary"!?!? If that is super ordinary I would hate to see what ugly means to them? The average woman really would not have a chance in hell by those standards! Kim Kardashian STUNNING both with or without SUPER sexy looking woman. Cameron Diaz again not the best skin in the world terrible pic but is stunning either way and SUPER stylish. Dyanna Torres looks like a trannie in her after pic WAY better before. Bionce TERRIBLE crimped hair, 'nough said. Hannah Montana always looks like her dad in drag to me, but cute still.
Lizzie60 Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 those pictures are ridiculous.. Anyone.. even the most beautiful woman/man can look like a 'baboon' if they are taken in their worst shot.. doesn't reflect the reality one bit.. It takes me 15 minutes from the minute I jump out of bed to the minute I step outside in the morning.. so .. no need to tell you.. I hardly wear make-up.. A lot of make-up looks hideous...
alphamale Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 i didn't look at the pics but my preference is that the women i date use make-up to enhance their features, not make their features
Touche Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I don't think Brooke Shields was about needing make-up at all. It's obvious that she's had Botox or that other procedure I can't remember the name of now...(restalyne maybe?) Otherwise, she is and has always been a natural beauty in my eyes. TC, that's so true! I always laugh at those ads. Look at this one and be sure to read the little blurb underneath:laugh: http://www.womples.com/2009/01/funy-before-after-teeth-photo-ad.html As for my makeup routine. It is never the same. I put on make-up differently in the summer and in the winter. And also my day/night make-up is completely different. All very natural looking but in a different way. In the evening I go for a little more dramatic eye and a darker/deeper lip color. I guess less "natural" looking than my day look but I like that look for a special dinner out or for a party. In the Summer I hardly need any makeup. I'm usually tan and it eliminates my need to use foundation and blush. Just eye liner, mascara, lip liner and a glossy lipstick. I'd add eyeshadow for at night and change the lipstick color but that's it. I guess I'm saying that I've never applied and used make-up just ONE way...for me it depends on time of day, occasion, time of year, etc.
Author Isolde Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 I wear very little but if I don't wear mascara and concealer around my eyes, I look like I have never slept a night in my life. Those two things make such a difference. I go without foundation whenever I can because it dries out my skin, and makes it look dead with no contrast. Foundation looks good only when I put bronzer and blush over it, which is usually too much effort. It takes a certain kind of face (I guess sort of big features?) to look good with heavy makeup (eyeliner all around the eyes, and dark lipstick). I actually can pull it off, but it makes me feel uncomfortable. *shrugs*
Tomcat33 Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 i didn't look at the pics but my preference is that the women i date use make-up to enhance their features, not make their features LOOOOVE that comment, LOVE it! I actually can pull it off, but it makes me feel uncomfortable. *shrugs* I never wear heavy eye makeup AND dark lipstick. It's only one or the other. Wearing them together is what makes you look foolish. I'm really a fan of a dark, smouldering eye with a nude glossy lip.
