daveman Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 This will be my first dinner with this girl, we have seen each other several times doing things like clubs, movies, walks on the beach. I am taking her to a spinning restaurant on the beach right around sunset. I havnt told her where yet, just told her to dress nice. The restaurant is casual to semi-formal. I just dont want her to go crazy and wear the fanciest dress she has and me show up under dressed. I dont usually dress up that much, I have a pair of black dress shoes, black slacks, dark navy blue slacks, and a white collared longsleeve dress shirt and a dark navy blue tie and thats about the extent of my dress wear. I'm willing to do a little shopping because if i wore what i have, i'd probably look like a waiter. I cant afford a full on tux or suit so im not going to do that. What would you suggest i wear to this?? Dont want to spend over $100 on clothes. Need to know by thursday. Thanks!
Squirtal Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Hi Dave, Sounds like its a lovely restaurant. Black dress trousers, and dress shoes and the shirt you described sounds really nice. Fitted shirts also look nice on a guy too and very smart. My partner and I went to a seafront Restaurant which was quite well to do and he wore similar with a navy tie too...he looked great and fitted in. Have a fab time.
AlektraClementine Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 as long as you have an all black ensemble from the waist down (trousers, belt, shoes, and socks).. I'd say all you should really spend money on is a shirt. Something sharp.. in a charcoal or "steel" blue. Either long sleeve, good material with a collar or a standard dress shirt. Don't forget the flowers. Simple. Maybe 1 lily. That will complete your look when she opens the door and sees you! Good luck!
ImThinkingWTF Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Bring a pair of condoms as well. a pair? haha
Author daveman Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 a pair? haha i have 2 penis's...
Author daveman Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 I like the charcoal shirt idea, but keep the suggestions coming.. im mainly interested in what shirt. I have everything from the waste below.
anne1707 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Is there a particular colour that suits & flatters you - one that maybe works well with your eye colour?
2sure Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Dave - For this date and for your life in general: BUY A NAVY BLUE SPORT JACKET AND A PAIR OF KHAKIS. You cannot wear a tie without a jacket, thats dumb. Of course you can take the jacket off , but you have to have it. You dont need a tie with a sport jacket at most establishments anymore, some require it. You need a jacket! Every guy, regardless of profession or lifestyle needs one. Without one, you look like a kid forced to wear your good shirt. If you are expecting your date to wear a cocktail dress, you have to wear a jacket.
Trialbyfire Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Avoid blue shirts. This is typical office wear. Subtle is nice. Pretty much any shirt that's tailored, besides loud and proud, would look good with a nicely tailored pair of dress pants and a decent pair of shoes. As for the tie, wear it draped, not tied. This way, if the restaurant doesn't require a tie, you can pull it off and stuff it in your pocket, without much fanfare. Be comfortable and try not to look like a stuffed shirt! Casual to semi-formal doesn't require much.
2sure Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Edit: you can wear khakis and a button down shirt, sans tie or jacket if the rest. is casual or climate HOT.
2sunny Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 wear the black trousers and go buy a nice button down collared shirt. something that doesn't have to be tucked in. have a young sales gal help you pick it out... they know what's in style and generally do a pretty good job. besides, she may give you a few ego strokes along the way... have fun with it. i like the idea of simple flowers - a small handful of one type will do - just don't over do it with a huge bouquet.
2sure Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Yes, you're right. Is sounds like a dressy beachy place: Black pants and a nice shirt. But ya still gotta buy a jacket some point.
Trialbyfire Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 One rule of thumb I always use is that it's better to be slightly under-dressed, than over-dressed. Don't ask me why 'cause that's just how I roll!
2sure Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 LOL. I always feel more comfortable slightly, just slightly, over dressed.
Author daveman Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 lol i realize i need a jacket at some point in my life, just cant afford one by tomorrow. and as far as tailored stuff goes, again i need it by tomorrow, is that enough time to get something tailored? and now that theres more than one suggestion, im getting lost as to which one to go with.. how about some pics, cause im an idiot when it comes to dressing nice. and i need to know exactly what to look for.

Author daveman Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 i just turned 21. the first style looks pretty good, think im gonna go with something along the lines of that.
2sunny Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 i like that look if you're planning to wear black pants... can't really go wrong with it. age appropriate too! go on and have fun!
Lucky_One Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 As for the tie, wear it draped, not tied. This way, if the restaurant doesn't require a tie, you can pull it off and stuff it in your pocket, without much fanfare. What in the heck is wearing a tie 'draped' instead of tied? Surely you don't mean just hanging there around a guy's neck? And stuff a tie in his pocket if its' not required? He can certainly wear a tie even if it isn't required. "Is that a tie in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?"

Never seen a guy with his tie draped around the collar of his shirt? It's a sexy look, if done by the right guy. It's a nod and a middle finger to the establishment.
