I've been on a few dates with this very special girl. It's end of semester this week and exam-time (grad-school), and then I won't see her until beginning of February when next term starts.

Anyhow, planning in advance for February. Was thinking of getting tickets to a musical for Feb 14th (~$100/ticket, a month ahead seems to be the norm).

So my question is, I'd like to give a her a Valentine's card when she gets back and enclose the ticket. But what do you guys (especially gals!) think is the best way to approach this -- would it more appropriate to ask first? I kinda feel that would spoil the surprise, but would she think I'm forcing her hand otherwise? Oy!

As a girl, I would suggest telling her you have made some plans for the 14th but it is a surprise! That way she's aware of the situation but you haven't ruined the exact surprise. I would love that! Keep her on her toes :)

good luck!

How many dates have you been on? Would SHE consider the two of you to be approaching exclusive relationship status?

From what you've provided so far, I'd be a little freaked by a guy making plans for almost 6 weeks from now, and expensive plans at that, and for Valentine's Day on top of that!

That's an excellent point, thanks Star Gaze. Glad I asked here first.
