wing81 Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Just curious how some people define the difference between dating and friends with benefits. Is there any situation that would fall between the two? Mainly confused on my current situation and of course would appreciate it if any females have any insight on why you would choose on situation over the other.
Geishawhelk Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Dating is a commitment to one other person. You commit to an emotional bond, and the sex is about making love and enjoying bonding intimately. FWB is enjoying the sex without any of the emotional hangups that come with it. Basically, you're both free as birds and out to simply have a good time. Marriage is something in-between, except without the sex. The reason you'd have a FWB (as a woman) is to enjoy what men have enjoyed for centuries. Getting your kicks but not being tied down. (if you get my drift.)
Star Gazer Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I agree with Geisha regarding the definition of FWB, but not her definition of dating. "Dating" doesn't necessarily involve any level of commitment. What it does have, that FWB does not, is an emotional connection. FWB is JUST sex. You may be actual friends as well, but the sort of emotional bond/connection that comes from a romantic relationship simply isn't present in the FWB context.
Geishawhelk Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Ok, yeh, I can see that...Maybe it's a transatlantic divide.....! Wouldn't you want someone you're dating to be exclusive though? I mean, wouldn't you prefer to know that the guy you're 'dating' is only getting it on with you? I'm just asking..... really.....
Star Gazer Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 "Dating"? No. I casually multi-date and expect him to do the same thing until we both finish the weeding-out process and filter down to just one another, and actually have a conversation about exclusivity. But I sure as sh*t don't multi-sex.
Nemo Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Dating is having sex before you (potentially) get engaged. FWB is having sex without any prospect of getting engaged.
Star Gazer Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Dating is having sex before you (potentially) get engaged. FWB is having sex without any prospect of getting engaged. That's actually a pretty good summation. However, I'd tweak it as follows: Dating is having sex before you (potentially) get engaged. FWB is having sex without any prospect of being in a committed relationship or getting engaged.
Nemo Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 That was a good tweak. Definitely hit the spot.
