Ross PK Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Well, I passed my driving test about 3 months ago, and I haven't driven since. I feel I've left it too long until getting a car, and that now once I get a car I wont be able to drive properly. Not to sure what I'm going to do, other then getting a couple more driving lessons once I've got my car, to get me back into things. I guess the reason why I've left it so long before getting a car is that I'm just too picky. After the Christmas period I'm just going to have to get anything that's cheap to run and reliable, as I really don't want to be leaving this any longer. I feel a bit stupid, because everyone else seems to end up getting a car quite soon after passing their test. Anyway, I've just made this topic to try and get it off my chest and hear other people's opinions or advice. Thanks.
Trialbyfire Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Three months isn't enough to forget everything you've learned about driving. You'll be fine once you get your car. Have you forgotten how to ride a bike yet? Doubt it.

Have you forgotten how to ride a bike yet? Doubt it. I haven't exactly been driving for that long though, I'm still a total beginner. It's different if you've been doing it for years. Even the driving instructor said it's not a good idea to leave it too long otherwise I'm going to go rusty. Even if I will still be able to drive good enough once I get a car, I'm really not feeling that confident about it.
griffinchicken53 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 try driving in more rural areas. less traffic until you get more familiar with the car.
melodymatters Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 I'VE HAD MY LICENSE FOR MANY YEARS, BUT i STILL GET ANXIOUS IF IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE i'VE BEEN BEHIND THE WHEEL ! sorry caps lock was on and i"m too lazy to go back... so... Tips, For starters, take really short trips, to the corner store and back. Have a friend go with you, somehow it's more soothing for me to have someone beside me, even if they don't know how to drive themselves ! And remember, the anxiety is all in your head. There are THOUSANDS of really horrid drivers out there . YOU, are going to be super careful and make sure you do it correctly ! That's to be commended ! When my D was born, I had not driven in quite some time, so it took me 3 months to feel comfortable driving her in my car. And hey, if taking a lesson or two will help you feel more confident, go for it ! Good luck !
carhill Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Buy what we here in America call a "beater" car. Inexpensive, nothing special to look at but in decent mechanical shape. That way, when you crash it, you won't get too mad at yourself. You English people all drive like maniacs anyway Seriously, get one ASAP. Only way to keep your confidence level up is to put the rubber to the road... Manchester will never be the same again. Good luck!
Storyrider Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 I agree with Mel and Carhill. I have anxiety driving, so I understand. But you can do it! If you have a setback, don't be too hard on yourself, and don't stop trying. Just because you have a bad day doesn't mean you should give up.
