prettybaby Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 It's amazing how many dating articles mention how "women love guys who can make them laugh", while the opposite seems to be hardly ever mentioned. What gives? Is it a turn off or a turn on for guys? Obviously, I'm not talking about dumb jokes and weak humor. I'm talking about witty comments that trigger genuine giggles. Thoughts?
fral945 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Neither a turn-off or turn-on for me. Witty banter is a nice plus.
tanbark813 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Guys like women who can make them laugh but women tend not to be as funny as men. I'm not sure why. My gf, however, is hilarious and definitely one thing I love about her.
kashmir Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I don't mean to stereotype, but being able to make people laugh seems much more common in men. I can't think of a single girl I've known who I'd describe as funny, but I can think of plenty of guys who are. Actually, there's this one group of girls I know who are hilarious when they're all together at lunch or something, but that's because they're really eccentric and just spend the whole time ripping on each other and everyone around them. They're funny and amusing, but it's not like they're individually funny. They're just crazy as a whole.
2sure Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 My husband and I laugh all the time. Yet he tells me women just aren't funny. More often, he is laughing AT me than with me. I love him, and dont mind as I laugh at myself too. Women are more likely to use sarcasm in humor...and I think men do not like sarcasm, at least not in their gf or wife.
Trialbyfire Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 There are people who are genuinely funny and others who think they're funny. I would say that people in general, are drawn towards the former and not the latter.
Jake Barnes Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Guys like women who can make them laugh but women tend not to be as funny as men. I'm not sure why. My gf, however, is hilarious and definitely one thing I love about her. I used to think this and I think its true when the genders are younger, but women seem to gain a sense of humor over time. At least it seems that way to me
carhill Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I find the ability to switch from serious to humorous and back again to be quite attractive in a woman. Such indicates to me the breadth of her emotional makeup and intelligence and that she can live life in the moment with specificity, even if her intrinsic personality is a global one. IOW, her eye can be on the big picture, but each moment is precious too. There certainly are plenty of witty women here on LS. I tune in as much for their humor as for their advice
Jake Barnes Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Then you should come on over to the DSM thread, Carhill. We're having a great time over there! oh yeah its a riot
Surfer Dude Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I'm one of those guys who dislike cynicism, sarcasm and sarcastic women, such humor is a sure indicator of some deep issues and I really don't like hearing it. The problem is, a lot of women are sarcastic. Sarcasm is just an excuse for complaining and pretending you were just joking.
carhill Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 oh yeah its a riot I've been following it but am still too close to mental illness to genuinely appreciate the flow of the humor enough to participate. I spent a couple hours yesterday at my mom's dementia facility and those visits affect me. I'll get there On-topic, feminine humor is inspirational to a man who is in love. Don't underestimate it....

Touche Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 My H thinks I'm funny...oh wait. I wonder how he means that? Hmmmm.... Jake, shut up. Carhill, hope we're not offending you.
Jake Barnes Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 You're about as funny as a pair of dirty white sox. has anyone ever told you that you have a fantastic sense of humor?
carhill Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 My H thinks I'm funny...oh wait. I wonder how he means that? Hmmmm.... Jake, shut up. Carhill, hope we're not offending you. Absolutely not (offended). I learned to find humor in mental illness (I know the thread is poking fun at the mental health industry, which I also find to be humorous) as a coping mechanism to prevent going crazy myself. IOW, not to take the very serious realities seriously all the time. I think, topically, that a woman who can disconnect herself from a serious subject and poke fun at it and herself is a healthy individual. There's a time to be serious and a time to be funny. In my case, the psychosis is worse now and mom doesn't recognize me anymore. To her credit, the examiner who interviewed us yesterday inserted sensitive humor into her conversation, and yet treated my mom as a person in the room with dignity and respect. Her combination of humor and appropriate seriousness garnered my respect. I guess that's the perspective I bring to this thread. As to the DSM thread, yahoo, I don't wanna get inside your heads
Touche Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Trust me you don't want to get inside my head...scary place. That's great about how the examiner handled things. I was just talking to another LS member yesterday about this. Well more specifically, humor as a way to dispel and resolve conflict. I never realized how often my H and I actually do use humor in that way.
carhill Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Well more specifically, humor as a way to dispel and resolve conflict. I never realized how often my H and I actually do use humor in that way. LOL....once in awhile the bulb goes off and I say to my wife "I'm being a b!tch, aren't I?" Only rarely does she disagree It's a gender-reversal inside joke we have....
Touche Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 LOL....once in awhile the bulb goes off and I say to my wife "I'm being a b!tch, aren't I?" Only rarely does she disagree It's a gender-reversal inside joke we have.... YES! That's exactly the type of thing I'm talking about. We'd probably be divorced by now if we both didn't have a sense of humor.
runner Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 i do, but its not high on my list of qualities. i prefer a woman who i can share witty and intelligent conversation with. ... and if she laughs at my dumb jokes
V.Vixen Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I am told fairly often by men that I am funny. Either they are good liars or I am a rarity.... things that make you go..hmmmmmmmmmmm.
carhill Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Well, it would depend on where they are looking when they make the comment
V.Vixen Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Well, it would depend on where they are looking when they make the comment hahaha! Wellll, I have been told this via IM and on the phone as well, so i am starting thing it means something. I could be mistaken though, it could all just be a giant ploy to get into my pants in the end.
Enema Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Well, 99% of women aren't funny... So, if anything... a man would be looking for a woman who understands his sense of humour, rather than is funny herself. Higher chance of success.
BentSpine Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Do I like women who make me laugh? I have yet to meet a specimen of such a rare spicies. I really, really want to be able to make my woman laugh. And if she could make me laugh, would I then have a harder time making her laugh?! That's my fear, that she would be able to foresee my punchlines so that my jokes would fall flat. I definitely like a woman who attempts to be funny. That tells me that she can lower her seriousness and be playful for a moment. If she's trying to be funny, she will be in the mood for appreciating comical nonsense from yours truly.
