Bells Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I was out on a date with a girl...and she wanted to "try driving my car", it was one of those newer models, and I kind of looked at her and said, "No way, I don't let anyone drive my car, sorry." I was wondering if I was being a numnut for not letting her, and she was wondering why. I said it was an insurance liability.
serial muse Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Yeah, I wouldn't either (first date, right?). Weird of her to ask, actually...I guess if she's just being cute and flirty about it, whatever, but hopefully she took your "sorry, but no" with good grace.
2sure Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 If it is an Italian sports car...she might just have been excited and curious to drive it. If it was a Ford Taurus....thats just too strange. Your response could have been: "Why?? I'm not even drunk , yet."

No, I don't let guys I'm dating drive my car, generally. If I know them well, perhaps, but only if there was some reason (road trip and taking turns, I'm too tired/drunk/sick to drive, etc). I don't let anyone borrow my car or laptop. Only two expensive things I own... Sorry people. All mine. (A live-in partner who shared finances could use them. That's it.)

I thinnk she did...we had a good evening, the rest of the night. She was a sweetheart, we shared a slice of dessert.
D-Jam Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I'd only let a date drive my car if we've been dating for a while and it was for some emergency purpose...like circle the block once while I run into that building where there isn't any parking. I am though going to take my GF down to a big parking lot and let her drive my car. She hasn't driven in 3 years and wanted to brush up because she will need to drive on a trip she'll be taking.
Trialbyfire Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Not on the first date unless I know he's a kick-arse driver. No one touches my car without mad skillz!

Gremio Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 No one touches my car but my certified mechanic.
allina Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 No way, absolutely not. The only people that have ever driven by baby are my old roomies of 4+ years (they were like my brothers) and my SO.
lovestruck818 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 No one touches my car but my certified mechanic. My uncle is my mechanic and he lives 45 minutes away but he's the only person I will let in my drivers seat.
Star Gazer Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 A date? NEVER. A boyfriend? Only after proving to me that he's a safe driver. I heart my car way too much.
flc Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 A date? NEVER. A boyfriend? Only after proving to me that he's a safe driver. I agree with this. I don't have any real problem with someone driving my car though, I just need to have some comfort level with their skills.
IfWishesWereHorses Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I could care less whether someone drives my car. It's insured. I can't believe how many people don't want someone else driving their car! My 20yo drives my car occasionally.... and I KNOW she's dogging it showing off when she does but... it's just a car.
Author Bells Posted December 2, 2008 Author Posted December 2, 2008 it's just a car. Great attitude. "Its just a 40,000 dollar vehicle!"

Wow til I got to this post, I thought I was the only one! You guys must drive gold plated vehicles! If someone wanted to drive my car, just to see how it felt, I'd toss em the keys. Way too many other things to worry about in life.
carhill Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 People drive my cars all the time. Rentals..... No one touches my irreplaceable, well-loved and massaged vintage ones, not even my wife. That's just the way it is
Trialbyfire Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 If you've put the TLC into your vehicles like some of us have, you're not going to let just anyone drive it. You can literally eat off her, inside and out. She's kept purring so she can meet my needs, when I want to go WOT. Also, jurisdiction reliant, your insurance is impacted, rates increasing, if someone else has an accident in your car.

Yeah, and I'm sure you use hundred dollar bills starting your fire instead of kindling in your fireplace, right?

I customize show vehicles. A lot of time and money goes into them and they are truly one of a kind. On my current car, I have $50,000 invested in it. It certainly isn't "just a car".
Trialbyfire Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 To put it into more female terms, would you allow just anybody to borrow a five to six figure piece of jewelry?
zhsoj Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 It's funny how people can have such hatred for their computer and at the same time such love for their car... It's just a machine. And a pretty basic one at that. Not to mention it is actively killing you when running.

My car costs almost $20k...BIG BIG difference.

And a pretty basic one at that. Not to mention it is actively killing you when running. To each his own. Some people feel a car is for transportation only, while others baby their vehicle. Adding to my analagy earlier that a car is like a child to me... some people think children are the greatest part of life, while others have nothing but disdain for them. It's what makes us individuals.
IfWishesWereHorses Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 To put it into more female terms, would you allow just anybody to borrow a five to six figure piece of jewelry? No, not just anyone. A friend for sure, those things are insured also, BUT many have great sentimental value. I can understand I guess if it is something you've put your time and effort into, but a car is put in jeopardy each time you drive it. While you might not be questioning your own skills, my D is out hotriding moms car around to impress her BF!
