Bells Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Not sure where to put this post But I have a question. WHY is it, the WORST kinds of diseases, are transmitted sexually? I mean, we catch colds and flus and crap that we can fight off with chicken soup and rest. But why is it, with sex..its the most MISERABLE? I've heard stories that involved "dark purple-like puss" in the the Vietnam days. You can lose the ability to have children by loosing your Uteren wall, I've seen pictures of what a male gentilia looks like for severe cases. Why the HECK is the MOST enjoyable feeling can have serious repurcussions? Is it because that area of the body can be the BIGGEST cesspool for such things? THat conditions "downstairs" are THAT favorable for such things....I mean I heard the HUMAN MOUTH was considered the dirtest part of the body, but now...eh...not so much. Anyone's theories?
You'reasian Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Depends on your beliefs, level of education and other biases as to why. Some will argue that viruses have evolved for survival purposes to have smartly attached themselves to our sexual reproductive abilities for their own propogation - a biological/chemical/evolutionary theory. The solution: practice safe sex (short-term) while developing vaccines that can destroy said viruses (long-term) Others will point to God - the belief that He allowed viruses to punish sin. Solution: Abstain from sinful sexual contact and wait until you are properly married.
Green Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 dude this a really silly question first off there are way worse things that can happen to a man in vietnam then VD like stepping on a land mine or being tortured like in Tropic Thunder... Secondly horible things happen anytime you do something fun like you go out for a drive and you come back with no face... or you go to outerspace and burn up on re-entry... if you really never want to get sick or hurt just try real hard to never do anything. Seriously if vd is the worst thing that happens to you in your life and you avoid Heart Disease, Brain Tumars, Morbid Obesity, Paralysis, Dismemberment then your life is pretty sweet
norajane Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 I guess you've never heard of cancer? Heart disease? High blood pressure? Diabetes? Salmonella poisoning? Most sexually transmitted diseases don't kill you. Many, many others do.

kashmir Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Besides AIDS, HPV, and Syphilis, the other common STD's are just pains in the ass (or in this case, pains in the groin...*rimshot*).
SoulSearch_CO Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 he didn't even post about the fact that you might have a baby No ****. 9 months of pure misery for the woman followed by - on average - 12 hours of intense pain getting the damn thing out. You spend a couple years teaching them to walk and talk so that you can spend the rest of their years with you telling them to shut up and sit down. I'm kidding - I really do love kids.

Lizzie60 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 WHY is it, the WORST kinds of diseases, are transmitted sexually? Anyone's theories? Huh???? only a few STD are really 'mortal'.. are they worst? I don't think so.. Most are very easily cured with only antibiotics..
Cherry Blossom 35 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Who calls them venereal diseases anymore? Isn't STD the usual label? Anyway....those diseases usually only get really gross in the late stages and MOST people treat them before they get that far. I knew a guy who got syphilis in his EYE ! How nasty is that?

But everyone is focusing on AIDS, AIDS, AIDS..
RecordProducer Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 There are relatively innocent STD's and there are deadly diseases that aren't transmitted through sex. So the question is not worded correctly, but your point is: why does sex, a nice thing that doesn't seem like a big of a deal, put us potentially at such risk? First of all, the worst diseases are AIDS and Hepatitis B, but they are not exclusively STD's. They can be transmitted in other forms, just as the flu or chicken pox can be transmitted through sex. Secondly, intercourse has a reproductive purpose and as such, is accompanied by fluids - and most bodily fluids contain high concentration of any virus we carry inside. So the medical AND philosophical answer is that sex is not an insignificant thing from a biological point of view: it should be seen almost the same as receiving somebody else's blood. The real question is: why don't we get STD's through touch or sweat or saliva? Well, thank God we don't. This is because these fluids are external and easily exchanged, so I assume, mother nature made sure we are somewhat protected in our everyday activities..
Isolde Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 RP's post is intelligent. I'll also add, as the OP mentioned, that STD's can make a woman infertile, which is an extremely big deal to some. However it has to get to an advanced stage before that can happen. There are many worse diseases than, say, gonorrhea or herpes. But, syphilis was pretty horrendous, back in the day; people's extremities fell off. And HPV is no laughing matter. It not only causes cervical cancer, but is capable of causing oral cancers in both men and women (rare, but it happens). There's no test for HPV in men.
