Last GF has a social work degree, shuns capitalism, rewarding people for their strengths, all into taking care of vicitms.

I'm a Libertarian. It irritated me. A friend told me we wouldn't last through the election and we didn't:laugh:

If it hadn't been an election year, you might have been fine.

I should also add I was reading "Atlas Shrugged" and trying to date her at the same time.

Ha. Ayn Rand has featured in some of my more stormy relationships, too.

I'll be honest: similarities are a plus. Too similar would be freaky, but I'm tall and skinny and find myself more attracted to similar guys. Also, I have a calm personality, so someone who's got a roughly similar attitude is someone I'll usually feel more compatible with.

I do like some differences though. But the similarities is what initially catches my attention.

I find myself attracted to similarities and differences, but in different areas. I'll list them and then elaborate:

Similarities - facial features, personalities

I have soft facial features rather than a chiseled, movie star look. I find myself more attracted to women with softer facial features like myself. My guess is it's something that developed in childhood, identifying a certain type of face with comfort and security (like my mom or grandmother).

Personality wise, I tend to be more attracted to women with an even-keeled personality (like my mom and dad).

Differences - body features

I'm average height (5'9"), have big limbs (arms and legs) but a small chest and torso. I find myself most attracted to short women (usually 5'3" or shorter) with small limbs and big chests. I think the fact that there are a lot of big breasted women in my family plays a role. I obviously like what the other men in my family like. I think there may be an element of familiarity and comfort there as well.

I think for most people there is a strong element of comfort and security in their choices of a SO. I think comfort and security are two of the most basic desires a human being has. Right up there with food, sleep, and sex.

I think your choices in a SO might also be influenced by your parents. Say if you had a relatively decent childhood and decent parents, you'll probably be attracted to more similarities. OTOH, if you had a painful childhood or came from a broken home, you may look for more differences as a way to find comfort and security you were missing.

My dad is short, very skinny, has black hair and "striking" features. I'm not attracted to guys that roughly look like him. Instead, I tend to go for guys who look more like my mom in coloring and facial features, and are average to tall in height. I've also found guys attractive who don't remotely resemble ANYONE in my family. ??? I guess I might be a bit of an unusual case.

When I was young, I thought attraction and excitement stemmed strictly from differences – I felt that I needed someone who was the opposite of my nerdy, geeky self to validate my self-esteem and masculinity. While that hasn’t entirely gone away, I’m now finding myself more intrigued by women with similar “nerdy” interests and senses-of-humor. Physically, what seems to draw my eye most quickly is a curvy body shape and fair skin tone/complexion – different from anyone in my family.
