Just curious: how much do you spend on each kid for X-mas?

My daugther told me, last week, how much her half sister is spending on each of her kids (she has two young kids, 7 and 9 I think) and she spends $75 each. What does she get for $75?

How much do you spend on your kids (how old, how much)

Do you still spend on your adult kids? (how old, how much)

I don't really know. I usually go by how the gift piles look to make sure they are pretty even.

Maybe like around six or seven hundred each? I have really no idea.

i have no known kids but if i did i'd spend around $100 per head. if they were adults they would just get a card.

nieces and nephews get books or clothes, and clothes are dependent upon their needs since their parents can use all the help they can get ... but I try to keep it reasonable.

bigger kids get restaurant or Starbucks gift cards for up to $30, as my budget is limited. This year, though, I'm giving out "family" gifts, and baking a bulk of it. The little bitty kids will probably rake it in though, as my thought is that they deserve to be spoiled.

When my children were babies, I'd have to say I got away with about 200 per child. Now that they are 8,6 and 3.. the things they want are bigger.. with a higher price tag so, any where from $500 -$600 per child. I also aim to make sure they all have the same amount of gifts and stocking stuffer's.. so everyone is happy.:)

Wow, mea! I wish you were MY mommy too!

No offense and I'm not judging but in a zillion years and even if I were a zillionaire I'd never ever spend that much (never have and never will) on our guys.

Do they even value all the stuff you give them at that young of an age?

Sorry, but that just shocked me. Is that the norm nowadays?

I guess we really ARE very old-fashioned.

haha. Yes my children value the things I give them because Christmas is the one time of the year that they are given things. Unlike so many parents I happen to know who spoil their children all year long, mine are not spoiled in that way so they learn to appreciate things. My children also save their money.. to buy gifts for one another and loved ones. Even my three year old has a little piggy bank can never teach them the value of a dollar to early.;) Most importantly.. the traditons and meaning of Christmas time are IMO.. the most treasured part of Christmas.

Well our sons only get gifts on Xmas and on their b-days. That's it. If they want anything else outside of that they work to earn those things.

And yes, it's important to teach them the right values. That's good that your kids, at such a young age, already are learning that lesson. That's pretty unusual to see it in kids that young today.

I don't know...maybe it's just us but if we spent that much on each of them, we'd worry that they're not getting the right message about what the holidays are all about. The message would get lost because of all the "stuff" we've bought them.

But it's good that your kids get that.

I was a single Mom when my daughter was little. She never asked for much, so I probably got away with spending 100 - 150. Now she is almost 13, still an only child, and we are financially more comfortable ...she still doesnt ask for much but the items are bigger ticket. I miss the days of piles of gifts for a 100.00! I dont think you can get much for 75 a kid. I dont know how people do it when their kids start needing to "fit in" and have pricey items. I'm glad sometimes to only have one.

For her cousins and other children, we spend about 50 for each...we dont buy for adults anymore - unless they have no children.

We typically spend anywhere from $100-$250 per child, with the oldest getting fewer (but more expensive) presents. I don't buy for anyone outside of my immediate family--my new immediate family, not my family of origin. But we have a X-mas party where everyone brings one gift.

In my family we all do pollyana. Two separate ones. One for kids. One for adults. The limit is $50-$60. My parents don't get in on this action. We tell them every year they should just throw their names into the pot but they refuse. My mom likes to get everyone a present but at least she finally smartened up and just gives us all moolah. She was getting a little old to be shlepping at the mall and then lugging that crap to the car in the bitter cold just to bring it home to wrap it all up.

It was nonsensical.

I spend $200-$300 for my daughter. and $100 for each of my parents and $200 or so for my husband.

My exH and I started a list so that we wouldn't buy the same things. So far my daughter is at $500 and my son is only at $150 and I need more ideas!

I didn't think I'd spend more than $200 each but then you buy them stuff that you would normally buy, and wrap them, like jeans, pj's, socks, undies, and those things they whine for when you go shopping in July, so really the over-the-top stuff doesn't go over $150 or so like the electronics and big toys.

No kids here but I do have young relatives. I get them what they want.

I use to spoil my niece and my nephew bigtime before I had kids.

My brother never had kids. He is the one my sisters and I could always count on to buy drums and other obnoxious electronic toys for our toddlers.

Yes....because they go home and take any toys with them!

Ohhh.. I had forgotten about this thread...

I think that $75 each kid is not enough.. toys are quite expensive and the kid will never get what he really wants.. (I think this year he wants a snowboard or something, which is about $200)...

When my kid were young I always spent waayyy too much.. I had no limits.. it seems.. I loved X-Mas.. so I probably spent close to 700-800 each one..

Even today.. they are adults and I spend about $500 each.. and now I have my grand-daughter and for her.. there is no limit..

I buy her toys every time I see her.. I want to be 'grand-maman gateau'..

Every year I swear it will be the last time I spend so much on my son and niece and nephew and the very next year I do the same thing!

I spend about £700 on my son and about £200 each on my neice and nephew - I spend about £200 on my mum and a bit less for my sis - I have alot to buy for so the others get a special inexpensive pressie that is personal to them

Its an expensive time but I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Lishy I see you're a big Katharine McPhee fan? I am too! I met Katharine last year at Six Flags. Shes so much prettier in person. She knows who I am.

Hmmm. We only buy presents at Christmas and on birthdays. Typical Christmas spending is ~ $200 per child and about half that on ourselves. Kids are 16 (girl), 14 (boy) and 10 (girl). My goals are twofold: to get everyone something s/he really wants and to be able to pay for it without incurring any debt. So far, I've been able to do both.

I think it depends on how old the child is. While I think it would be silly to spend 1k on a pile of toys that a young child will quickly get bored with, I think spending that same amount on a lap top for a teen is a great idea.

I usually spend about $500 but that's because my son never buys much during the year.

So he uses the xmas season usually to upgrade his computer, buy new video game consoles, upgrade internet, etc.

I have two nephews so this year I spent about £10 on the seven-year-old and about £5 on the two-year-old. I don't suppose I would have spent much more on either of them even if I did have a job.

My sister-in-law usually gives me ideas what to get them (which is whatever they want) but I try to buy them things I think they should want. I don't believe in spoiling children or giving in to their ridiculous demands for more crap. What does a seven-year-old know about good taste?

Am I a bad uncle? Maybe, but my own uncles never bought me any presents at all when I was a kid.
