Just wanted to know what music and films or, indeed, anything else, help you cope with your break-up. I always find it interesting how for some people listening to songs about break-ups can be a real help whereas other people just want music which takes their mind of their situation. I guess it might all be dependant on what stage you are at coping with it all but I've always fallen into the former category.

I listen to music and watch films which complement my moods and thoughts rather than oppose them. It's a bit like having a friend who totally understands you and it can be really therapeutic in the right moments as long as it's not just an excuse to wallow. Anyway some good break-up albums for me have been:

Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (the track 'I Don't Want to Get Over You' is really gut-wrenching)

Also, probably the most uplifting album of all time for me (in a weird way) is Electro-Shock Blues by Eels because the singer's life was so tragic during the period he was making it - much worse than anything I have ever experienced in my own life. It starts off incredibly depressing but as it gets closer to the end of the album there are some really hopeful numbers, ending with the track 'P.S. You Rock My World', one of my favourite songs of all time. It's just incredible he can have such a positive outlook considering his situation and it feels just like a light at the end of the tunnel.

On the film front, I think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has an incredibly heart-warming and unique perspective on break-ups. In fact, I'm planning on watching it when I get in from work (after my first workout at the gym, of course :))

Anyway, just wanted to know if any of you guys had a similar view on music and films and any in particular that help you cope?

Good choice of music - Blood on the tracks has helped me greatly aswell as Bob Dylan was going through a tough breakup at the time, and i can totally undestand how Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind helps you, it's a brilliant film and it is pretty feel good i'd say. I've not heard the Eels album yet but my dad has it so i'll give it a listen.

there's a few more albums i'd reccomend too

-Green by REM - because i think it's really uplifting no matter how **** i feel

-For Your Pleasure by Roxy Music just because it's amazing and to me, like a personal friend!

-Hatful of Hollow by The Smiths because there's at least one song on the album which will relate exactly to how you feel, no matter how you feel

- Storm In Heaven by The Verve because it's the most relaxing, spaced out album ever and you can escape from everything with it

- Pink Moon by Nick Drake because it's darkly uplifting and simple GORGEOUS acoustic and he killed himself on anti depressants straight after recording it so at least you don't have it that bad !

- Tender Prey by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds because it's so evident that nick cave is more depressed than anybody so at least it's some consollation . .

Yes, like your style. Dylan's great stuff, a really good one is the side 2 of Live 1966 album, for raw emotion..... I dug out loads of stuff my parents used to listen to when I was a kid. Early Stones, lots of blues, like Bessie Smith is amazing. I'm into old-school punk, which is great when frustrated and angry. But weirdly, my ultimate break-up record was "My girl" by otis redding, which i hadn't listened to in years and just felt compelled to dig out when my bf dumped me. It made me cry loads, but it felt kinda good, I don't know why such a happy, lovey-dovey song, but i think it reminded me of what we had.

On the T.V side, I couldn't face watching all the romantic stuff, it just made me feel miserable and cynical... What completely saved my life was watching the entire series of Monty Python's Flying circus, although I've seen it loads of times and now it almost by heart, it was just the best thing, it really helped me... ;) Just stuff that I liked when i was a kid, teenager, was generally good.

Jamez123, Pink Moon is great but a little too bleak for my tastes in this situation. Strangely, enough I had Bryter Layter on while she was breaking up with me so that's that ruined!

Also, hermit, I got 'My Girl' in my head randomly the other day but I knew if I listened to it that it would make me very upset.

Can I recommend that people watch the Raisins episode of South Park - it's all about break-ups and has a really great and funny ending which is guaranteed to at least make you feel a little better!

Music has pretty much been a life saver for me. Literally right after I got dumped, the first song that came on (random) my MP3 player was "Life After Lisa" by Bowling for Soup. The most potent lyric of the song for me is

Life after Lisa is not so bad at all

Replace "Lisa" with her/his name and you're sorted.:)

But I have made a massive playlist full of breakup songs that revolve essentially around a "F*** you, i'm going to get through this" theme. I'd like to highlight a few that I would advise people to check out.

(Most of them are only really applicable to a guys POV, that being all I know!)

Ben Folds Five- Song For The Dumped

The standard breakup song. The lyrics do not pretend to be clever and their simplicity will put you in a good mood. It says what any dumpee should be thinking for their own sake. That plus the piano-driven rock make this a must.

So you wanted

to take a break

Slow it down some and

have some space

Well f*** you too!

Cake- I Will Survive

The original has been a female floorfiller for years, and why the heck not. This rock cover is for us guys though. Download it. Sit. Listen. Enjoy.:)

Did you think I'd crumble

Did you think I'd lay down and die

Oh no, not I

I will survive

Guns 'n Roses- You Ain't The First

A nice little acoustic number with self-explanatory lyrics.

You was just a temporary lover

Honey you ain't the first

Lots of others came before you woman

Said but you been the worst

Sa' you been the worst

Whitesnake- Here I Go Again

Again, self-explanatory. Yes, you're alone again but you've been here before, and you got through it. You will again.

An' here I go again on my own

Goin' down the only road I've ever known,

Like a drifter I was born to walk alone

An' I've made up my mind

I ain't wasting no more time

I'll stop myself now otherwise i'll be here all night listing songs. My best advice to people who have been dumped/broken up is to get a playlist of whatever songs you know will lift your moods and save it in your media player for emergencies. The times we spend alone are the worst after a breakup and having such a collection all ready for you is a must.

Good thread!

Worthwhile mentions for the hell of it:

Bowling for Soup- A Friendly Goodbye

Matt Skiba- Good F*****g Bye

Luther Allison- You Upset Me Baby

blink-182- Dammit

Maroon 5- This Love

Audioslave- What You Are

Go West- King Of Wishful Thinking

and....Elton John- I'm Still Standing. >_>

Yeahyeah! Cake = awesome. Good call SelfCentered!

For some reason, I find their song "Shadow Stabbing" and "Stick Shifts and Safety Belts" to be good break up songs simply because:

Shadow Stabbing has sweet lyrics and metaphors

Stick Shifts is just funny and silly

AND!

The um...

Ben Folds Five one made me smile too ;)

For those of you out there who are hot hot women who just wanna MOVE ON, here are two songs I really like (that are on the radio!) that I think are great breakup songs:

Little Jackie - The World Should Revolve Around Me

*This song sounds sassy, and the lyrics match. Personally, the song makes me want to get up and dance, AND reminds me (or at least makes me feel), like I am one very special lady, and who cares if my ex left, I'm still great!

The Ting Tings - Shut Up and Let Me Go!

*This song is upbeat and fun - and kind of empowering! Who the **** needs an unloving ex, eh? ;)

I have listend to that Ting Tings song too for exactly the right reason! That plus my ex hated them so I get a kick out of that.:p

(She made me miss them at Reading Festival....And I missed the last hour of Metallica :()
