I got asked to dance with a band just now...

I don't know if I should say yes or run and hide! Do you guys really, seriously think there are musicians out there who can actually value dancers? Will I get laughed at for not being one of them? Will the audience be angry that I'm sharing a stage with them?

I'm sorry to post so much. This makes knots in my stomach, and I really, seriously need advice. Unless you just want to tell me I'm crazy and full of myself, in which case you don't get it at all and I respectfully ask that you skip it.

I feel like I'm going to throw up. This is everything I want and everything I fear all at once. And if I did decide to do it, HOW? How would I convince myself to leave the house?

Come on, stop acting coy - you know what the replies will be to this.

Just ask for support and encouragement if you need it - there will be plenty of it. As for the fear and insecurity, you will of course have to face them alone.

You can do it, though! :bunny:

I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be coy or annoying. I know it seems bizarre that I have these issues, but the degree to which my ex wrecked me is extreme. I've never been this hurt or made to feel this worthless.

sedgewick, of course there are bands and audiences that value dancers!

When I'm at a show, I like the additional entertainment of dancers or other entertainers besides the band. It adds more energy onto the stage.

While it's different from what you're going to do, here's a really cool one with Pearl Jam and a woman who's a combination translator and entertainer. I love the beautiful fluid movements of her hands and how she incorporates her body movements to it.

If you have knots in your stomach and want to run away, it is a GREAT opportunity to pursue.

To remove some anxiety, jump up and down a few times to get rid of some anxiety and get yourself pumped up.

I say go for it and do it without regrets. years from now you won't regret doing it. Plus dancing on the stage versus knitting, which do you prefer?

Yes they do! It is another way to get into the industry. Madonna was a dancer for a band before she became a band. Plus it is good experience to meet and greet different people.

I turned off the sound and Kim did a great job conveying the message.

Shakira looks ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC doing her bits of belly dance whenever she performs ... it brings an exoticness to the music when there's someone up there dancing with such grace and style. And I don't doubt that you'd look fantastic up there too!

I say go for it, and have a little fun while you're doing it – life is short, and we're meant to enjoy it, you know?

I am a singer/composer/producer and I love and appreciate dancing as much as music. A good dancer and a good musician and a good actor are at the same level in my book.

However, if you're not a professional dancer but just kinda following the rhythm in a sexy manner, you might find yourself considered on a lower artistic (not human!) level than the professional musicians. This has nothing to do with dancing vs. music. This has to do with profesionalism vs. amateurism.

And yet, no one should make you feel bad about yourself regardless of what you do for a living. Are the audio engineers less than the producers? The drummers less than the singers? No.

Don't apologise. Believe me, I know what it's like to feel worthless (in my case, that includes a lack of dance, writing and knitting skills). The only thing I find bizarre is why not one of the replies you receive, telling you musicians do not, in fact, have mythical status, register with you.

Will you at least be convinced by the unanimous endorsement this time?

You guys, seriously, THANK YOU. I know I'm a pain in the ass, really I do. I just have such a massively low opinion of myself since being told that nothing I do is worth anything by the person I wanted to marry.

As for amateur vs. professional, well, I do practice every day like a fiend, and go to classes twice a week, and perform with the first tribal company established in NYC! I'm not making a living dancing like the are playing music, but I try really hard to be good at what I do.. Dance is the thing I love more than anything in the world. It's my obsession, and it's the only time I'm truly happy, so I do it a lot and try constantly to get better! I hope I'm good enough for them...

I really am trying to make it sink in that what Joe feels is not how *everybody* feels. After all, this is a guy who, when on tour and offered a bed to sleep in, prefers to sleep under the kitchen table in his bass case. Really.

If they asked you, it means you ARE good enough for them. Otherwise, they would've asked someone else.
