My ex boyfriend said to me a week after he dumped me, "I'll never know if breaking up with you was a mistake or not, but i want us to be friends."

What does he really mean?

Oh lordy.

We should have a "what does let's be friends mean?" forum set aside for questions like this!

He's either feeling guilty and thinks being included in your life will be good for you - soften the blow -

or -

He's keeping his options open and putting you on hold until his next break up so he's got a home comfort to turn to.

This applies as much to girls who say this, as guys.

It could mean exactly what he said, but between the lines, I would assume it means "I don't feel like I made a mistake."

Interpretation: If we're friends, I don't have to deal with the drama of an immediate severance and hopefully, I can slowly wean myself off of you.

Probably pretty close here.
