kizik Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 My ex-girlfriend and I broke up 6 months ago, and I thought it was the worst thing that could possibly happen to me. Now, I have achieved things I thought not possible, and I am a stronger, more self-assured man. I'm writing here to tell everyone still hurting that it does get better. Here's what you have to do. Immediately following a breakup, you don't know where you stand - you still want to talk to that person, as you can't imagine a life without them. Don't call, write, etc. Go no contact. When you go no contact, you get to experience life without that person always on your shoulder, judging your every move. You get to live without being b*tched at, for once. No contact allows you the opportunity to clear your head and begin life anew without the constant influence of your ex. It also allows you the harsh but true reality of what it's going to be like from now on - and that is a life without your best friend. Re-connect with friends. A lot of people when they enter relationships make them the center of their lives. While this may or not be unhealthy, the fact is that a lot of your old friends get relegated to second-best - to a "lesser-important" status in your life. Now that you're broken up - call them. Hopefully they won't feel too betrayed by you, and will welcome you back into their lives. Set goals. Whether it's to get back into college, create art, travel or whatever - having an important project in your life is a GREAT way to re-establish your crushed self-esteem, and to take your mind off the immense pain that losing your loved one has caused you. Who knows, maybe your ex was somehow keeping you from achieving these goals. Now is the time to do what YOU want to do. These are just a few generic tips that I have learned simply from living, and from the intelligent people on this site. Good luck you guys and gals. I promise you, it gets better, but you have to MAKE it get better.
