start having a conversation with this guy again after it's been so long

Pls. Give me some advice, there's this guy I know from high school, and we went to the senior prom together. We both really liked each other but we didn't end up going with each other, I don't know why. So after highschool, we ended up going out with someone else. But i still thought that they guy was still handsome and cute. Anyways...

 

I broke up with my boyfriend of 5 years about 8 months ago, but I still thought of hims still yet. I also just found out that the guy was on a break with his girlfriend or I don't even know if he broke up with her, but they have been going for about 4 years too. My question is how do i try to start having a conversation with this guy again after it's been soo long since we started talking? Please help me, but I really want to find out if he is really broken up with his girlfriend and not on a break with her. What does it been when they are on a break, isn't it the same as broken up? Please help me..

It doesn't matter if it's been 20 years or 2 days... Just call him. You might have to remind him of who you are... but hey, anything's possible. If you end up together and have a 50 year anniversary, who will care how you initiated the conversation...
