Alright, so I'm a college senior as many of you know -- my friend is trying to set me up with his project partner in one of his statistics classes. I don't know much about her yet, but according to some pictures that my friend showed me, she's very cute. She's also supposedly very sweet and very bright, and I trust my friend's judgment on this.

Unfortunately, I'm extremely bad at meeting new people. I get nervous, shy, and awkward. Once I know someone better, I totally open up and relax. Also, I'm also really not used to "being set up." Regardless, I tend to have good luck with people I am interested in. Once I meet a girl I like, they tend to like what they see once I release the shyness barriers a bit. However, it's been so long since I've done this, as I got out of a two-year relationship a few months ago. Furthermore, I also want to be more cautious before jumping into anything (assuming it even gets to that point).

So, to those that have been set up: How do you best deal with these sort of situations? How do you act? I'm debating getting *slightly* tipsy again just to kill off the nervousness, but alas...

I'm extremely bad at handling these sorts of situations :p Any advice would be appreciated. I'm nervous :X

Well first of all, refrain from any drinking. Showing up tipsy would've shown you lack respect for her and just looking for a night of fun. So skip the alcohol and brush up on your manners. The best thing about a blind date is that it's casual, so no need to dress up in a suit or anything. Go as yourself in a jacket and some sleek jeans. The most important thing is about being yourself. Let the girl know the real you rather than an invented Vertex, and try not to bring up your kinks on the first date. :lmao:

It's not that I want to be someone I'm not -- I really like who I am as a person and wouldn't want to be anyone else... although I'd love to remove my shyness. It's so annoying when it kicks in -- I just want to punch myself repeatedly and tell it to go away.

I've used alcohol before to kill off nervousness ... to remove those endless spinning wheels in my head that do nothing but generate worry. I use it to try to help bring out aspects of my personality that I would otherwise be too chicken to do early on.

I'm also the nervous-on-first-date type, and it's a must rule to get slightly tipsy. Otherwise nothing works out. I can control myself though, and I'm not encouraging you to do this. Just find out what works for you, to make you relax a bit.

honestly man it doesnt alter your personality at all. you know right before a speech in class your heart is racing and thoughts are flying around? well this gets rid of that feeling of anxiety..

it makes you your true self. the way you act at home and with close friends.... herbage mixes well with it too if you catch my drift

What are you worried about? What's the worst that can happen?

There's nothing really that can solve your problem easily, apart from what you're already doing which is going out there and getting experience. The more you get the easier it will become to relax and enjoy the experience. Perhaps the initial nerves won't go away but at least you'll be able to deal with them :)

I know some people work better with a little alcohol but that only means you'll get addicted to using alcohol from here on out. Might as well just confront those nerves, because there's always going to be an encounter, meeting, or situation thats bound to make you shy or nervous.
