I dont know what I want to do with my life. I know what I want to do. I want to travel. But I need money to do that. I have lots of things that I am interested in doing but i dont have the ambition to take the steps that will get me where I want to be. To be able to travel as much as I would like to I would need a good career that gives me lots of vacation time and pays really well and I would need to go to school to get that but I cant go to school without knowing what i really want to do. So I work going-nowhere jobs and I'm unhappy with that but what else can i do when I dont really know what i want to do career wise. Im also an introvert, I would like to have a job where I dont have to deal with people alot. I dont have any problems dealing with a few people here and there but I'm just not a really happy cheerful bubbly person, not that I'm mean or anything. I guess I'm just kind of a go-in-get the job done and not waste time talking kind of person.

Also I cant seem to commit to anything because I feel like somewhere in this big huge world theres something better for me and if I commit to a job and buying a house in a certain city then I'll be stuck there. NOt that I dont already feel stuck (because I dont have any money to go places and do things that i want to do)

Anyway, theres probably no answer for this except "get off your lazy ass" and be more dedicated to working. but i just wish i could find something that makes me happy and was wondering if anyone could relate.

Nah -- that's a crappy answer/solution, especially cos it'll just make you feel more discouraged, despairing and "stuck".

The thing about traveling the world in a meaningful way is that one actually needs to have a very cheerful and positive disposition. It will help you appreciate all the good people, sights and experiences...and also help you get through the inevitable challenges that would be a part of it, too.

I've heard of people who get their travel funded (at least partially) by travel magazines or websites, in exchange for writing an article or two.

Another way is to have bartending skills, and you can "work as you go". A friend did that...got paid cash, worked when she needed to. She preferred English-speaking countries but got along just fine in a number of countries where that is not the first language.

Then there's the family friend who is a casino dealer for a cruise line. You could check into what types of skills are in high-demand in that industry. Could be yoga/pilates, or whatever else.

So...bartending school, learning one or more new languages, writing and submitting any type of articles for local newspaper, contributing to travel blogs. Travel agent school. Casino dealer or yoga instructor course.

But again. All of this requires having a real "pleasure for people" and excellent people skills...so ???

You mention that if you lock into a job or move somewhere, that you fear being stuck. There's nothing wrong with dreaming and being open to possibilities, but fearing the risk that you will be stuck without ever trying is what will keep you exactly where you are. You don't have to buy a house or make a drastic move, but it might be a good idea to change things up and commit to something new. More than likely, if you get a house and a super job, you will make sure of it that you'll doing the traveling you've dreamed of because you'll already be in the practice of committing to things.

Hope that helps

I like the travel magazine/website idea. Where would I find these places though? And I actually would like to write. But I dont really feel like I have enough original ideas to be a writer. I was always pretty good at English and I thought about taking more English or journalism classes. Someone told me that taking a creative writing class would make a huge difference but I've always felt like writing is a talent and if I dont have it now I never will.

And I dont have people skills. Well, I should say, I'm not a people person. Its just that I'm pretty withdrawn and not real outgoing.Thats a problem with alot of the careers that I've considered, also another reason I would like to be a writer.

But the truth is I can be outgoing sometimes, Its just that I get so tired of feeling stuck in this place and all of the monotony, If I actually got out in the world and saw new things I would enjoy talking with people more and being more sociable so in that case, the bartending idea might work.

Really I've just never had the guts to go out that far away on my own and take the chance. If I had piles of money (a safety net) saved up, I might but I've always just got by from paycheck to paycheck so that hasnt been an option. Thanks everyone, for the ideas though, It gives me a glimmer of hope and I'm thinking more seriously about the journalism classes now also.

I can relate to you. I'm not a people person at all. The 9-5 rat race isn't my thing. I dread going on interviews and having bosses. So I quit and doing Internet Marketing full time now.

Since you enjoy writing, you can get into this too. You can start a blog or even start your own online business. Many people are doing this and many are very successful. Just gotta stick with it. You might just find it fun and rewarding.

A lot of people use that as an excuse to just never follow their dreams and deepest desires -- it is self-limiting (self-sabotaging) to the max. But it is a very normal human response when it comes to taking risks and possibly failing. One way to overcome it is to just work on gaining the courage to take that "Leap of Faith", and trust that there will be a safety net for you no matter what.

You might want to do a 'visualization' exercise: *IF* you had more than enough money than you could possibly use up, what would you be doing, how would your life look, what would you make sure to bring more of into your life, what would you make sure to eliminate from your life?

The trick then is to just take really baby steps (minimal risk) towards that. Doesn't even matter if you ever "get totally there", but you will end up feeling more encouraged and fulfilled knowing that you are at least making the effort to 'try to' get there.

The journalism and creative writing courses sound like excellent ideas -- go for it!!! :bunny:

Most people in the world HATE their jobs, but the truth of the matter is you need money to function in life and if you go through life trying to find the "perfect" job, you may be lacking money for a long time. Pick something that will allow you finance-wise to have the life you want and don't worry about liking it. If work was meant to be liked, it would be called "play."
