I think it's because it goes against his principles of not burning bridges with anyone

But if he doesn't keep his promises, he WILL burn bridges with EVERYone -- he's got to be able to figure out that people will stop trusting him if he keeps proving that he can't be trusted (by reneging on his promises.)
