ARDriver01 Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 I took about 30 seconds to ask a coworker about his plans for Halloween, his boss came up to me and said that if I like my job I shouldn't let myself get caught BS-ing by the higher ups. Apparently, they had a typical morning meeting in which they spoke of lay-offs. This star 30 year mechanic that spoke to me was in the meeting and he's spreading the word about lay-offs. I was pretty upset when he started giving me crap. I almost went off on him. I don't like it when people attempt to dangle my job in front of me. It's rude. Especially when he's not my boss. Where do people get off spreading fear among employees? It really pisses me off. I don't know maybe I'm too willfull>

I am not surprised that your company is talking about potential lay-offs and if it were me, I would make myself invaluable to them. So other than that, things are good with you?
Trialbyfire Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 How did he approach you? Was it in a friendly way or was it as a superior, albeit not yours? Normal interdepartmental interaction of this nature is usually a discussion between bosses, where this other guy would be telling your boss about catching you bsing. It sounds to me like he's trying to be helpful, rather than harmful.

I am not surprised that your company is talking about potential lay-offs and if it were me, I would make myself invaluable to them. So other than that, things are good with you? I keep up with all news in the morning and evening. It's bad enough reading about the unravelling of our country and it's economy, but now I have a guy telling me in a superior "you better straighten up kid" fashion that I might be layed off. I think it's rude. I mean, I asked him if they talked about my position in the meeting and was like: "Well, uh no but they're looking at everybody". He said it in a group of about five people to me. I'm not even part of his department. His problem is that he's over crittical and talks s*** like an old lady getting her hair permed. He's always talking down to his techs and displays passive aggressive bouts of rage. Nobody likes him for many good reasons. Oh yeah... other than that, things are going okay.

It's bad enough reading about the unravelling of our country and it's economy, but now I have a guy telling me in a superior "you better straighten up kid" fashion that I might be layed off. I think it's rude. But that's reality, my friend. I mean, I asked him if they talked about my position in the meeting and was like: "Well, uh no but they're looking at everybody". He said it in a group of about five people to me. I'm not even part of his department. Well, acknowledge and move on. His problem is that he's over crittical and talks s*** like an old lady getting her hair permed. He's always talking down to his techs and displays passive aggressive bouts of rage. Nobody likes him for many good reasons. I don't know your age or experience, but wherever you work you are going to be around alot of different kinds of people, some with personalities that you may not like. For the sake of keeping your job with this highly experienced mechanic, try to get along with him and do your best. That's probably the only way to keep your job at this point, given the economy.
whichwayisup Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Talk to your immediate boss about this or let it go. Whatever you do, for a while, just keep a low profile. If your company isn't Unionized, ANYONE can be laid off, for whatever reason, so don't give them any reasons. Work hard, stay out of office gossip and hopefully things will settle down.
