...then consider becoming a radio ham and joining a few clubs. I've been a ham for over 13 years, and probably no more than 3 out of 20 hams at those club meetings are women, so you ladies won't have much competition. Most of the guys at the club meetings are middle-aged or retired, but join some of the more outdoorsy ham radio clubs and the younger guys will start showing up.

 

The test needed to become a ham is not that difficult (you can even buy books for it; try for Technician class), and many of the walkie-talkies they sell now are no bigger than a bar of soap. At the very least, you'll gain some new communications skills in the bargain.
