A friend of mine informed me yesterday that he was picking up a woman from the airport that he met online a month ago (we hadn't spoken in about a month). She is from Russia and supposedly has found a job here in Canada as a nurse and has a work visa for 12 months. I'm pretty suspicious about a work visa and a job being put in place within a month. I know these things take time. She is also moving directly into his apartment, sight unseen (though I suppose he's seen her now, since she arrived yesterday).

My friend is a sweetheart, without a lot of experience with online dating, and this seems like the height of insanity to me. I gave him a hard time about it, but I guess it's his mistake to make. But it all seems quite dubious to me, and I'm worried. He said a lot of foreign women contacted him when he first signed up to the online dating site.

What does this sound like to people?

yeah that sounds insane your friend must be desperate an old and this girl suposedly hot and young... she could really get alot of money out of him

My ex got a contact like that. She (he?) contacted him through his work email. I guess they target professional places and college staff. Anyway, she led him to believe that she needed X amount of money, and was sending him pictures of herself. When he replied asking her the details, the amount went up and the pictures got skimpier. He replied, and told her of a place she could stay, but that he didn't have much else to offer. She replied that her life depended on it, and asked for a much higher dollar amount in order to get there. She wanted him to wire her the money. He replied back that he didn't have any money to spare, only the name of a person she could contact about a place to stay. He didn't hear from her again.

He was convinced it was legit right up until the end.

Of course, it was likely her looks that convinced him.

We had the mother of all blowouts over that one.

My friend is not old, but kinda lonely. I'm waiting for a report. I don't know who paid for the plane ticket. He doesn't have a lot of money. It would surprise me if he'd sent money over. He's just a regular working Joe. He's in his late 30s and she's 26, by the way. What is it that makes guys so stupid???? This seems like the oldest scam in the book. I just emailed him for an update.

Well, I think they should all take their weiners to a psychiatrist (I was going to say shrink, which would have worked just as well ).

That's how I solved some of my problems with choosing inappropriate men. Mind over matter.

No, he didn't send any money. My bet is she will start asking for some now. And I agree, women are also stupid about love and attraction, but there are mail order brides for a reason--that kind of stupidity is more male.

The whole Foreign Bride thing has always been a scam from day one, IMHO. A typical MO is for the woman to convince some lonely American guy she'd be the perfect mate, get him to send her enough money to get her to the states, marry him for a year or so and then take him for everything he has in a painful and nasty divorce.

It's unfortunate that in the US, divorce law is so "woman friendly" that even foreigners can get away with it, and make a profit from it.

Not sure about online, but every guy I know who visited Russia for whatever reason; job relocation, studies, etc, came back with a Russian bride.

They basically glue themselves on you and never let go.

Meeting face to face is one thing. American men are generally much more appreciated by foreign women then the ones at home. This is about "Matchmaking Services" who take advantage of that fact.

Ever heard of Hans Reiser?

I have trouble trusting and believing women in general. Moreso with online women. Personally, I'm sickened by the level of sleasiness, and deception. I believe the online dating population is dominated by

1) The morbidly obese. These women don't fall in love, they roll.

2) The party girl extraordinaire. They try to fill their otherwise meaningless lives with loud music, drugs, alcohol, run-ins with the law, and an endless supply of drama. Failure and burnout are in their DNA.

3) The princess. Their requirements and expectations are exceptionally high, but they offer little or nothing in return. You get more return from a prostitute.

It is absolutely terrible.

I get a lot of spam from Russian women.

I'm part-Russian.

That's where I get my shadiness.

What does he have to do with this? He's the murderer of his Russian wife.
