As any black woman working in atlanta knows... its hard to work under another back woman, especially if they are jealous of you. I go to work everyday and try to keep out of trouble but these two black women (who aren't my managers) are always writing me up for petty reasons. Within a period of 3 months I was written up 6 times for silly things like coming back from lunch a min or 2 late or for having to restart my computer too many times because its not working. One time I was written up for not saying good morning to one of them. They considered that to be insubordinate. For evey write up I get it takes away my insentives. And I'm tired of it. I'm always ready to pack up and move on but the economy is hard right now and I've been putting up with their bs for the past 10 months (but I've been working there for a year) and I'm starting to get tired of it. I'm trying to be strong till I find another job but I've been looking since I started working there and have found nothing. Can anyone suggest anything for me or give me some advice on what I can do?

What you are describing sounds a lot like harrassment and hostile work environment. How big is your company? Generally writing someone up only happens regularly at very large organizations, which means you have a solid HR department.

If the write ups are really that petty and really that frequent, I'd suggest that they are burying themselves. Go to HR and tell them you feel harrassed and that these so called superiors are making it so hostile for you to come to work in the morning that you are practically in tears. Hopefully this will get you moved away from these women.

Absent all that - you really need to find another job, that you feel confident is a good fit for you, before you move. Do not jump from the frying pan into the fire just for the sake of getting out and do not leave without having something else! This market is way too precarious to be sure you'll find something soon!

Good luck to you!

If they're not even your managers, then go over their heads! Talk to your boss, talk to their boss, talk to anyone who can get them away from you.

I've worked with several of these types of women (both black and white), and the best solution I've found is to have THEIR boss tell them to back off. At one place I worked, a female manager hated me on sight, and she told the owner that if he hired me, she'd just fire me, so the owner took away her firing privileges, lol! She eventually quit, after about a month.

I feel behaviour of a person doesn't depend on their colour.I know some white women who behave like this.

I'm not saying that only black women act like this or all black women in a higher position act like this. I myself have worked with a white women that act like that but I jus find that here in atlanta the majority is black women who carry on this way at work. What sparked this post was the fact that I was recently written up for insubordination for not following an order due to me not hearing the order. And the manager knows I didn't hear her because she said it herself that she knows I didn't. The company is a very small company and our hr dept consist of 2 older ladies sharing a med sized cubical we barely have 500 employees. All the managers and higher managers all stand behind and support each other so it hard to find someone to turn to for help its only the male managers who knows I'm being done wrong but don't care enough to step in and say some thing. I'm thinking of taking a leave of absence for a while so I can find another job.

Standing behind one another and supporting one another is all very well, but if it over-steps the boundaries of professionalism and Law - and let's face it, there are laws against this kind of thing - then they too need action.

File a complaint, through proper channels. Keep copies, and a record of what has happened, and when. Keep it professional and civil. Make no personal remarks that could be taken out of context, and state that if something is not done, you will have no choice but to hand in your resignation, deal with it as constructive dismissal and take legal action through the appropriate organisation outside of work.

Don't quit until you have another job lined up.
