sunshinegirl Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Ha - it just occurred to me tonight (and it's late) that McCain's pick of Palin as his VP smacks of the same sort of desperation and misplaced optimism that many people put into rebound relationships! Just think, he's even described her as his "soul mate" despite only having spoken to her twice before putting her on the ticket. He sees her as "the one" even if half the country is groaning at the choice. And, like so many rebound relationships gone bad, Palin's halo is already dimming under the harsh light of day. "What? She's not totally perfect and the woman of my dreams? What was I thinking?!" Hee hee. For some reason this thought cheered me up.
underpants Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 She does resemble his former wife (also a former beauty queen) before the accident that led him to Cindy. That campaign is really just all to desperate housewives for me. You may have a point however. All around it is unfortuately, rash and bad judgement. IMHO. ...I'm sure there was a...connection.
Trialbyfire Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Palin is to McCain, what Helen was to Troy!
Woggle Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I see right through this but the republican base is eating it up. Mcain and the republicans know what they are doing. She had them at hello.
jerbear Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 That campaign is really just all to desperate housewives for me. You're funny. :lmao: Don't forget Laura Bush said she was a Desperate Housewife during the 2005 White House Correspondents Dinner. It is about 2 minutes 50 seconds in. Palin is to McCain, what Helen was to Troy! Didn't Troy get sacked by a Trojan? So McCain trojaned everyone.
Woggle Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Republicans might suck big time at governing but they are masters at getting elected and they have their reasons for nominating her. On the political boards I go they are already talking about her as if she is a female Bush meaning a downhome woman that you would like to have a beer with and they are pitting her against the elitist Chicago liberal that is Obama. It is complete absurdity but it is the stuff that wins elections. I advise liberals not to be too cocky.
Trialbyfire Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Didn't Troy get sacked by a Trojan? So McCain trojaned everyone. Yes, Troy was sacked by the Trojans. No, McCain represents Troy attempting to protect Helen. The Dems are going to sack McCain over this faux pas political move.
grogster Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 According to the NYT, Palin was McCain's third V-P choice behind Lieberman and Ridge. Both these gentlemen are pro-choice and thus unacceptable to the GOP's ultra-conservative base. Pro-life Palin was not so much a rebound relationship as an ideologically arranged marriage. Palin, in fact, is so pro-life that she campaigned (successfully) against her pro-choice mother-in-law in the race to replace Palin as Mayor of that little burb. Now that's ideological rigidity. Family Thanksgivings must be awkward.
The Collector Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Ran against her own mother-in-law? This woman is comedy gold.
Trialbyfire Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Add in the abuse of power allegation and the irony of her daughter getting pregnant at 17, when she preaches abstinence and you've got a Shakespearean drama in the making. Oh, lest we forget, McCain is a well-known philanderer picking an ex-beauty queen as a running...mate...
grogster Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Ran against her own mother-in-law? This woman is comedy gold. Palin did not run against her own mother-in-law. Rather, she politically supported her pro-choice mother-in-law's opponent in the mayoral race to succeed Palin as Mayor of Wassila. I'm sorry, my post was not written clearly.
underpants Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Oh, She was a member of the 'Alaskan Independence Party'. Whom's goal was to succeed from America. So much for 'country first'.
Author sunshinegirl Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 Oh, She was a member of the 'Alaskan Independence Party'. Whom's goal was to succeed from America. So much for 'country first'. Yes, and I can't wait for this story to splash across all the headlines (why isn't it yet??).
grogster Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Yes, and I can't wait for this story to splash across all the headlines (why isn't it yet??). According to the NYT, Palin belonged to the successionist AIP for 2 years! That's a lot more than some temporary dalliance. The McCain people did not do a good job of vetting this candidate. Sloppy, sloppy.
Author sunshinegirl Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 I didn't mean to turn this into a political thread - not on the Coping board. To me it really just did strike me as funny that Palin seemed to be the perfect choice in the moment - a choice made in haste and with a lot of hopes pinned to her beauty queen crown. Yet as the dust settles (i.e. as the honeymoon period wanes) she is suddenly emerging as someone with her own baggage and warts which weren't at all apparent at the beginning. Much like when people rush into new relationships without knowing anything about who they've picked out as their target. (okay fine, I am thinking of my ex and his stupid office hooch.)
underpants Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Do you think they will break up? McCain and Palin that is.
Author sunshinegirl Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 It seems inevitable. I mean, really, how many rebound relationships make it?

I'm sorry, sunshinegirl. My bad. I didn't notice that this was the "Coping Board." Still, I bet I'm coping better right now than the poor guy in charge of McCain's vetting team on Palin.

Unless Obama/Biden really mess this up, McCain's going to be coping post election! "What did I get myself into? This woman isn't what I thought. Next time, I'm going to be looking for someone ethical". Sound familiar ssg?
Star Gazer Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Do you think they will break up? McCain and Palin that is. I think they just might. But how would he ever convince us that his rebound-rebound is "the one"?
Art_Critic Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Palin is like a rebound relationship for McCain ...... and Biden is like an abusive relationship for Obama... Biden did nothing but bad talk Obama thru his election bid and now Obama wants him back...
Trialbyfire Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 ...... and Biden is like an abusive relationship for Obama... Biden did nothing but bad talk Obama thru his election bid and now Obama wants him back... Apparently, women aren't the only ones who want bad boys!
grogster Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 ...... and Biden is like an abusive relationship for Obama... Biden did nothing but bad talk Obama thru his election bid and now Obama wants him back... Biden's a blowhard, but Palin's a successionist. Also, she has 5 children, including a 4 month old special needs child, and an out-of-wedlock grandchild on the way. How, pray tell, will Palin find the time and energy to function effectively as Vice-President? This pro-family stawart will have to outsource family care. The irony is sweet. I'd prefer that she outsource the vice-presidency.

sedgwick Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Okay, please don't kill me, but you don't SUCCEED from the union, you SECEDE. Meaning she's not a SUCCESSIONIST, she's a SECESSIONIST. If we're going to accuse her of treason, we might as well look like smart Americans and spell her particular type of treason correctly. Carry on. (hides)
