I hate slang! I really do! And it seems that some of the cutest of the men who happen to be single are the ones who don't like speaking proper English. I've had to have phrases translated for me in text, and have pissed off a couple of people in the past because I didn't totally understand what they were asking!

MEN! I really do appreciate it when a man speaks properly to me. No, I don't mean the Queen's English. Just don't assume that because a woman is in your age group, or younger than you, that she understands all of your hippity hoppity lingo!

Just when I THINK I understand what "What you on" means, someone asks me "What's good tonite". I answered the way I was instructed to by one person, but someone else told me to use it as an opportunity to suggest that we meet up.

I get a text asking me what I'm on tonite... I say "popcorn and a movie". And he asks me a second time, after asking which movie. I'm assuming he was trying to send an early hour bootytext or something, considering he's a former fling. But the other guy... my goodness. I can't keep up with this! (This particular former fling... who was so good in bed they should reproduce him and sell him in adult toy stores... speaks in such a way that I can only understand every 3rd word he says.)

They have decent jobs, and I assume they speak proper English at work, or at least something close to it, so why throw slang at me?! I don't want to insult anyone but good god!!!

I don't encounter men like this, and have never slept with a man repeatedly that I could not understand.

Where are you meeting these guys? Maybe you need to raise your standards a bit...

My standards are just fine, thanks. ;)

Then what are you complaining about?

Jee... I don't know. What does my original post say?

The former fling was someone I met a very very long time ago, while out trying to piss off my ex. He's a bad boy through and through. We bumped into one another years later, and started a little affair... once again while I was having problems with my ex. Why have a fling with such a guy? Read my post! The only sort of fling worth having. ;) If you're gonna do it, you might as well do it well.

I permanently ended things with my ex several months ago, and ended up calling this guy in a weak moment, but didn't answer when he called back. Didn't want to be rude, so I texted him midday as not to give the wrong impression. I actually thought about seeing him again, but I just can't do it.

The other individual is a business associate and former classmate. He spoke fine to me in person, but... in casual settings, some people tend to relax their speech. Maybe you don't know anything about that... I don't know.

The problem is that some guys speak a certain way around people they know, and apparently are making the assumption that I can understand certain things.

And like I said - raise the standards of the people you associate with, and you will eliminate the problem.

I don't know a soul that talks like what you described, nor would I even begin to fathom where one finds such folk.

And if a guy who is great in bed is your top criteria over his ability to communicate effectively, then I guess you should expect this kind of thing, no?

Top criteria for what? He was good for what he was good for then, and just one example. I'm not dating him now, and I don't intend to. And if I did intend to have a FWB relationship with him at this point in time, then that's all he would be... That has nothing to do with my dating standards. That's the reason he was only what he was.

Maybe it's just a racial matter, or maybe it's just your age. I don't know. Considering the occupation and public presentation of the other, and the current occupation of the cleaned up one mentioned above... I can only assume that it is a racial and age group matter.

Thanks for your input anyway...

I wouldn't recommend tryin to turn this into a racial thing, if I were you.

And I'm 33, and work with professional dancers from the age of 17. So, unless you are insinuating that the elderly are the ones speaking this way, I still don't get it.

I saw your original comments, and they were exceptionally offensive, to be honest. I am glad they were cleaned up, as they wouldn't fly well in this environment. Not all of us have that mentality to even use that word that you did... :(

Pardon? I didn't clean anything up at all. I didn't say anything offensive, and did not change my wording in any post here, thanks. A moderator must have changed it.

I stated what I said in my original post for clarity, and I'm sorry if you or anyone else has a problem with it. I honestly find it offensive that you would say "such people" with regard to those who know how to speak proper English yet use slang around people they're comfortable around.

Fact of the matter is that this is more common among minorities... and yes, younger generations.

I googled it. :-/ And that's just disgusting...

KinAz, I totally get you. I have encountered the same from people I never expected (professionals), so I agree, it has a lot more to do with racial group -sorry to say, but it's a fact-, rather than standards (??).

Blumpkin

Even within the generally broad range of my `to each his own` view, that is absolutely disgusting.

Not that it should be outlawed or anything... but still, eeewww.

THANK YOU! I have male friends who do not use much slang when speaking to me because they know that I may not understand it. I honestly don't know of anyway to address it without offending anyone when I do run into it. I don't watch MTV and such, so there are a lot of other things I miss as well. (After questioning an ex about some jokes he was making that I didn't understand, he actually asked me if I even knew who Snoop Dogg was.)

The guys who approach me using slang (and my friends are the same way) are the ones who will be politely, and quickly, dismissed. A new one: My bff was asked if she was "locked up" or something. Sure, this was just some guy on the street, but she had to stop and ask because she had never heard it before.
