Hey, I've visited Alberta a number of times for extended stays, and there's no way you can say that a Chinook in winter, replaces tropical weather. :p

Okay, I'll let you get away with #2 because you admit to being biased.

Yes, but they're not...ALL...like that!

Haha....I live in the upper-middle part of Alberta. Chinooks only exist about 3 hours south of me. BUT...skiing in the rockies is a great way to get a fantastic sunglasses tan. :p I tell ya...I'd much rather have tropical weather too.

#2....yes, I'm biased, and feel stupid for even asking my original question. Yes, I do legitimately wonder sometimes, however I can usually talk myself through it. I'm really asking out of my own insecurity...

This thread is worthless without pictures, lol.

Just stay TRUE to yourself. A confident, self-assured guy who sees people for more than the sum of their looks will trip over himself trying to get to you.

Don't worry about what women other guys are dating. They are not the guy for you! Instead, focus on yourself, your wants and your needs. Make yourself happy and be confident in who you and you WILL be very attractive to the right guy.

If I sat around wondering what some other guy has that I don't I'd simply destroy myself from the inside out. Instead, I focus on self-approval.

Besides, I don't care HOW hot he or she is. Somewhere out there, someone is tired of their crap :)

I wish Caliguy was Washington, DCguy

In reading the thread entitled 'Why do women like the bad boys', I came across some interesting stuff. And now have a question of my own...along the same lines of thinking, I suppose.

I'm currently single, therefore, unavoidably, my guy radar (guy-dar? lol) is back up. It seems that all I see (particularly in my snobby, suburban town) are these guys who are with the typical arm-candy, high maintenance type of women. Why is that exactly? (By arm-candy, I mean the tanned, overly made up, cute, petite girls with no brain that's apparent). Is it just a sex thing? Or do you guys see something (ie; intellectual ability beyond that of signing a credit card slip) that we normal girls cannot?

dont sterotype all me. i personally dont want the arm-candy. i would rather have someone who can add to me. by that i mean someone who can fill in some of my gaps. i dont mean to sterotype either but it has been my experience that women who are overly cute, overly groomed, overly trendy take a lot of time and effort to be that way thus leaving very little room in their lives for anything that acutally adds depth to their character. i dont have time to deal with a high maintenance chick.

i dont care about how good it makes me look to everyone else, or what people think about the person i am with or whatever. most times guys just want other people to think highly of them so they date the best looking girl they possibly can. not all the time, but most. i just dont get into it. i know enough of these women to know i cant do anything for them and neither them for me.

  1. How did they get a tan in Alberta, if it's not summertime?
  2. How do you know they're high maintenance just by looking at them?
  3. How do you know they have no brain just by looking at them?

There are certain probabilities reflected in a person's appearance. Doesn't mean all people fall into these generalizations, but many do. The way people visually present themselves is telling because it reflects the image they have chosen to project. People usually choose to project an image that represents a group they identify with or aspire to join. A woman who has bleached, straightened blonde hair, lots of makeup, fake tan, and unsophisticated revealinng clothes is choosing to project a ditzy, mainstream, bimbo image. It would be rare for a very intelligent, cultured woman to want to project such an image. There are always exceptions, but we're talking about averages.

While I agree about projecting images, there's nothing in the OPs opening post that suggests any of the women have the bolded points. Also, it's reliant on how tastefully, bleached, straightened hair is done. I've seen some well done looks, on many nationalities of women, which include bleached and straightened hair.

I have a certain look in mind that may or may not overlap with what the OP is describing. It's not about individual elements but the overall package.

Me too. The pickings down here are slim and all the women I am interested in live up North! LOL

Do you really think overweight girls are automatically smart? And the more fake looking ones are dumb? More media brainwashing.

Most men I know and date like the natural beauty, not caked on makeup, and overly tanned and lip injections look, and one who can dress elegantly but manages to be sexy and classy, she doesn't have to show her thong above her jeans...in other words the men I am in relationships with like beautiful women, not the gross looking fake slutty looking women like you have described in your opening post.

Posted

You can't always judge a book by it's cover. My wife likes to do herself up and dress to impress when she goes out but she also watches C-Span the History Channel with me so she is not even close to being stupid. You never really know a person until you spend some time with them.

Posted

There is a difference between dressing up for a night out and being an overly tanned slutty looking tramp with tattoos and your shirt so short your ass is hanging out, as well as your boobs for all to see.

If it makes her happy to look like that why not.

Well the kind of guy I would date and be in a relationship wouldn't go for the obvious slutty look with lip injections and tattoos.

By the way, anyone can sit and watch a show on C-Span and the History Channel and respond to it. This doesn't make them a rocket scientist, either.

Well most people don't need to marry rocket scientists, just someone intelligent enough to share their interest and discuss things that are important to them.

She is not a rocket scientist but her interests go beyond American Idol and Heidi and Spencer.

No one I hang around with is discussing that stuff. OR the people at work, lol.

I think OP is probably jealous. A lot of women are hateful and when they see other women who are more prettier, sexier etc then they are, they have to make up stuff in their mind about those women so they can feel better about themselves. Women are very competitive and catty.

These days someone can have breast implants, fake tan, dyed hair, wear revealing clothes and still be smart/successful, especially in California where just about everyone is a bit fake and high maintenance. And women who don't fit that mold tend to be jealous and catty about it. It's true.

Just because someone is high maintenance and dresses provocative and has fake boobs doesn't mean they are stupid, but a lot of other women will hate on them though and then wonder why they can't get the guys. It's just jealousy.

You know how women sometimes make themselves feel good about their passion for some bad boy by framing it like she is going to help him and change him? And the hot sex will be a bonus? Well sometimes an intelligent man seeing a vacuous but hubbatastic woman will tell himself he is going to educate her and broaden her horizons.

I like a women who takes care of herself and wants to look good. Of course down here everyone has tans and dresses provocatively. It is somewhat the Latin culture to show off a bit on Friday and Sat night. I find that some of the women fit the stereotype of beach babe but most have day jobs work hard and want to have fun and look sexy on the weekend. No problem with that.

But to get to your question I think a lot of guys see having a beautiful women on their arm as a way to show off, especially to other guys.

Posted

You have to realize its the quality of the men too.

These guys are probably equally as stupid/shallow/typical dumbass type of men. I don't think you'd want that for yourself either....

Arm candy is supposed to be shown off. That's the nature of the beast. You take an extroverted girl, who puts in great effort to look a certain way, and she'll push to be in public situations. You have a girl that tends to be more introverted, less apt to put in effort on her appearance, and she won't have that added motivation to put herself on public display.

I would love to be able to swing between arm candy and lazy sweatpant girl. But everytime I try the arm candy look I end up like a clown, not like arm candy. :o In my old age, I've come to admire the effort and skill it takes to stay in fashion these days. Hours of pouring over magazines, trudging through malls filled with teenagers to find that perfect outfit.. the one that enhances your bust while slimming your butt. The 2+ hours and high cost of highlighting and styling your hair. The tons of money for manicures, tanning booths, waxings... You can't get that without some serious cash flow coming in.

I guess that's why I end up thinking those girls are a bit daft. I mean, I find it hard to justify spending my money on all that waxing, buffing and polishing. And maybe they need to spend that money on validating themselves? But I would think learning a new skill or hobby could be just as validating. Or maybe they do all this for the relaxing affects? But I would think a massage would work better. Or maybe they like the attention they get from looking that way? But I go back to: aren't there better ways to boost your confidence that last far longer then 2 weeks?

So although I admire their dedication to their appearance, I still have a difficult time understanding it.

p.s. I'm not talking about average women who looks nice. I'm talking the mahogany fake-n-bake tan, nails done every two weeks, wax on alternate weeks, own only designer clothes and wear only designer fashions. The very clearly "decorated for your visual enjoyment" women.

Posted

"Decorated for your visual enjoyment." I love that!

Decorated, like a Christmas tree, or a room. That's a good way to look at it.

I think you are on to something. It's visual enjoyment. Most men want a super feminine woman, even if just in fantasy or at certain times. It makes them feel manly. (Sorry to generalize here.)

But, to be fair, we women (generalizing again) sometimes want a guy who is good with a hammer and works with his shirt off once in a while, even if it is just to change a light bulb.

I live in a big cosmopolitan area and see many women like you are describing. It's like their only job in life is man-catching!

Now, if a woman wants to do all that AND she is a kind person who isn't a gold-digger type, then it's no big deal. Go ahead and dress anyway you want. You've got more going on than just the exterior.

BUT, there are many women where I live who spend hours a day with a personal trainer, at the nail salon, at the hair salon, at the tanning salon, at the mall....etc....with nothing else going for them.

No other interests, no time spent with their families. I'm not kidding. It's like they spend all day wrapping a present with nothing in the box.

I think that's sad.

Posted

My mom told me a long time ago that you can catch any man with your looks, but you need more than that to keep a good quality guy around.

I agree. Women are so jealous of each other. Just because a girl takes pride in her appearance and hygiene that's a bad thing. You never see threads started by beautiful women saying "why do men like frumpy girls?" or thin women asking "who would you rather be with a model type woman or a woman with more curves?" I really don't think men think or care about these things as much as women do.

Posted

Oh and another thing, you can't just assume these women who spend all this money improving themselves are air heads. Most of them have good jobs that afford them all the designer clothes, waxing, plastic surgery and everything else. You can't be broke and afford all that stuff. I think alot of women see a pretty girl and want to assume she is stupid to make themselves feel better.
